Maya

Right now I'm going through the tutorials for Maya 5.0 Personal Learning Edition. I'm loving it. It's really great. I would love to participate in mod projects as a modeller but I need the full version of Maya. I was just wondering if anybody out there is a 3d modeller in this mod project and has any advice for me. I am not considering buying Maya because it's extremely expensive and I'm only 15.

Thank you,

First, you'll definitely need a new modeling program, whatever you decide. The free versions of the professional software all are difficult at best to convert to a format you can use outside that one free program (they want you to buy the full version if you're going to do anything useful). Gmax conversion is annoying and buggy, and I have no idea how you'd even start trying to do maya ple. So anything you made with maya ple would be useless to any mod makers. Lucky for you though, there are plenty of free/under $50 modeling programs. Try searching for blender, wings3d, etc. If you've got someone (like me) who has 3dsmax, the conversion and export is pretty simple and quick.

Second, you'll need to learn whatever program you decide to get. Obviously, you need to be able to make things worth using. Try www.3dtotal.com and www.3dcafe.com for tutorials, 3d total has some very good beginning stuff. Pay close attention to anything involving low poly game modeling. Other than that, just practice endlessly. Maybe if you posted some of your work I'd be able to give you better advice on this part.
