NPC's close doors/gates after going through

Was going to mention Covenant myself, it is indeed scripted to close after it has been open for a small duration, would hopefully be an easy tweak ?. As to another two points raised by pinkytwist here, there are some workarounds but you need to be on the PC for one of them. However, the first fix is available to everyone when those pesky hobos keep stealing your beds. When in workshop build mode you can assign people to beds as you would assign them to guard posts or food production. So if you find someone sleeping in your house, just assign them to another spare bed. Also to make doors that only the player can open, I found a useful little thing. I noticed when one of my companions was trying to reach me, they got stuck behind a door that was open. Watching them use their amazing path finding skills was a privilidge as I watched them continually run head first into a door without thinking of moving around it. It was then that I realised that NPC's can open doors just fine, but closing them appears to be something that baffles them beyond all reason.

So, for the PC workaround for creating doors that only the player can open, you start by utilising this ---> http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1267/? <--- It works via the use of cheatengine, which I've been using for years and this allows you to build objects absolutely anywhere even if they're inside other objects. So here's what you do..

  • Use that "mod" to place down a door in the middle of the street as a free standing object, no need to put it in a doorway yet.
  • Now exit workshop mode, and activate the door so it is in the open position.
  • With the door now set in the open state you pick it back up in workshop mode and place it in your doorway so it looks like the door is closed within the confines of the doorframe, just like a normal door placement.
  • Use the cliche step of "Profit"
  • Enjoy

Now, the open/closed state of your door is reversed, when it's open, it's technically closed, and when it's closed in the doorframe, it's actually open. This stops NPC's opening these doors, effectively blocking them in/out of the area, but also as an added bonus, it also means that sometimes your companion will do something useful and "close" your door for you in passing!

So I hope you can make use of this information until a proper mod comes out to fix it!

EDIT : Forgot to mention, you'll probably need to use the doors from one of the Settlement expanded mods.

Yes, thank you! MY BED IS MY OWN ONCE MORE!
