Modders Abusing the "Block" feature?

Humans don't react well to criticism, or "being told that their babies are ugly".

It takes an emotionally mature and well adjusted person to graciously accept constructive criticism of the wonderful product they have birthed to the world.

The block feature helps with criticism that is dumb or toxic.

When applied to defect reports, try to be compassionate and consider the emotional maturity demonstrated by that response.

I don't even get it. When someone reports a bug with one of my mods, my immediate reaction is "oh s#*! I f*#@ed up, better fix it soon!".

Maybe even too much so, I got criticized recently for making a workaround patch for a bug in NMM*.

If nothing else, then just because if it breaks the game for the user, it might break the game for myself, too.

Meh. I guess I'll be releasing more settlement mods myself in the near future...

* I have a patch for my Lechmere Station which is an ESL-Tagged ESP, so that you can move it down in the load order and still don't use up an ESP slot. Though turns out, NMM still considers such files "masters" and won't let you drag them down below other ESPs.

Two things... first, I'm fascinated that this thread was necro'd after 3 years

Second, don't mod authors have the ability to select whether options such as bug-reporting are available to users? I seem to remember visiting some mod pages and seeing a limited selection of options for bug reporting, posting, etc...

But you don't wanna turn off bug reporting just because people are posting the wrong things. Bug reports from the community are valuable, some mods are just too large to test alone. That and that there can also be compatibilities with other mods you might never find out about without help from the community.

I haven't made may mods myself, but one thing I have found is that, most people post in comments rather than reporting as bugs. For me this was fine because there are not many comments to search through. I could see how some could get lost though is its a much more popular mod.

On the flip side, you probably don't want a mod page that lists 30 bug reports or more if they are minor things like mod conflicts.

I gotta admit. I do have a problem myself. I deleted Facebook due to getting on there and being too opinionated towards strangers and their opinions, usually while drinking a bit. It's always dumb things though, that normal people just ignore.

Just earlier today I replied to a post in mod requests that I should have just ignored. Something that would be really quite technical to make and the requester stating " I'd do it myself but I'm too lazy and busy" Go to their Profile and Zero User files, Member since 2014 and Zero endorsements..

Ehh.. it's hard sometimes to just ignore. LOL

Towards Mod authors though, I always show respect. This stuff is time consuming and done for no reward other than the gratification of creating something and bringing enjoyment to others.

And.. I guess some authors can be hard to deal with/jump the gun and ban people for no reason, all that stuff. Not much can be done I guess other than manually downloading the mod again using a different account and adding it to your load order manually.

I can understand blocking folks from commenting, because some folks can be seriously overbearing, but blocking access to the mod page entirely..?

You know when you release a mod, it's no longer just on your PC. You don't want to break others' games, so you will naturally want to fix bugs as fast as possible. Perfectly normal reaction imo.

Agree, a two step ban might be better. But, I get the feeling anyone bitter enough to block someone is also gonna block them from mod access.

To ask Nexus to remove that feature entirely is a lot to ask. Mod authors get nothing for their work so to give them some freedom over who gets it seems fair.

I think 99% of mod makers would never choose to block people from their content but I guess there is also a possibility that some are unaware that blocking is not just restricted to comments. I never knew this until reading this thread.

So a two step process might be worth pushing for.

I'm a mod author.

As a rule I don't block people from commenting or downloading, they would have to do something very over-the-top for that to happen (something on the level of mass spam or posting illegal content but that would get you banned by the moderators first before I even notice it).

That said, other modders are not so lenient, and let's be honest, some of you guys post really stupid comments. Maybe next time to stop think before you post such:

Examples:

1. accusing the modder of making a mod that doesn't work without proof (mainly because people don't know how to install it or didn't read the description about how to start quest X)

2. posting a vague "bug report" that doesn't detail anything it's just something short and stupid like "omg why doesn't X work", you don't give any details at all like what's your mod list or what character level you are or whatever

3. phony bug reports that are either caused by another mod or even by vanilla, again you don't bother to check, you just accuse without proof

I've had an idiot on YouTube accuse me of bugging his game to the point where fast travel outside of the Institute crashed his game. I have NO MODS that make any changes to Institute travel. This is the level of stupid us modders have to deal with.
