ninja_lord666
Intro:If you've seen a video game-related story on network television, chances are it wasn't exactly peachy. Despite rising revenue that makes film executives green with envy, the video game industry is often portrayed as conventional entertainment's raucous, hyperactive kid brother. The list of gaming's negative side-effects is seemingly inexhaustible: games are addictive, games ruin relationships, games make kids fat, and of course, games train mass murderers. Pretty scary stuff for a pastime who's most enduring mascot is a jovial plumber. To point out the factual inaccuracies of such grim claims is a tempting proposition, but rather than simply fan the fires of the argument, we'd like to present a new one altogether. Believe it or not, games can be good for you. And we can prove it. Here are five ways in which video games can make the world a better place for you, me, and Mario. Find the rest here:http://us.i1.yimg.com/videogames.yahoo.com...3460&page=0 I was amazed when I read this, and I'm sure the rest of the community would like to read it as well. Vagrant0
The list of gaming's negative side-effects is seemingly inexhaustible: games are addictive, games ruin relationships, games make kids fat, and of course, games train mass murderers.I'm pretty sure there are dozens of other things that are doing worse than videogames... High fructose corn syrup for one, Yellow 5 for another. Then there's the fact that parants expect the school system to raise their kids right, the school system can't even raise itself right, and everyone involved is only interested in the quick buck. The problem is that as far as positive development goes for most people, it's non-existant. The only ones who don't end up fat, stupid, and/or lazy are those that get their kicks from harassing those fat, stupid, and/or lazy people, and want to distance themselves from those they see as deviant. As for the article, it reads more like an advertizment (the actual advertizments don't help), too many quick bites of information without much evidence to back it up. Honestly, installing DDR in schools won't make the fat kids thinner, it'll just make the athletic kids have better rythym and timing, meanwhile those without any will get abuse because they suck. Regardless, unless the kids are doing it 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week, they won't really get any benefit. Rather, durring the 20-30 minutes a week that most classes have gym time, a teacher can sit a kid infront of a machine for 3 minutes while they read the newspaper or whatever. The kid finishes, goes and sits down (gasping for breath), while another kid goes on the machine. So now rather than the 15 minutes of kickball, dodgeball, or whatever that promotes teamwork, they're pressured into a solitary, (or 1 vs 1) brief, episode, then spend most the gym time remaining in recovery. However no mention of the actual benefits are mentioned as everyone is so quick to pat themselves on the back for being cutting edge. Hey, anything to avoid thinking about all the real problems in the world.

Are you ready to do that now? the school system can't even raise itself right, and everyone involved is only interested in the quick buck. Those damn greedy teachers, with their five-figure salaries! Hey, anything to avoid thinking about all the real problems in the world.Yeah --- like HFCS.
Vagrant0
As I recall, you didn't want to talk about HFCS in another thread for fear of making a fool out of yourself. Are you ready to do that now?Hasn't stopped me before, I'm just not as informed as I probably should be before tackling something that many people hold dear and couldn't live without. I'm no nutritionalist, I eat like crap myself, but the whole concept behind adding sweateners to practically everything consumable just seems wrong, and nobody is interested in stopping it because there's so much money in it. Those damn greedy teachers, with their five-figure salaries! It's not the fault of the teachers, some of them anyway, the problem is that the school system is severely underfunded and even the few teachers that seem to give a damn often have trouble just getting the materials they need to teach with. So instead they stop trying, read from the teacher's guide, show movies, and just do the bare minimum. If there wasn't a problem with the school system, you wouldn't have 60% of highschool seniors barely litterate. Even in the suburbs where class sizes are smaller and there is better funding, there is still a significant portion of students who can't read well, if at all. By saying "everyone involved is only interested in the quick buck." I didn't mean what teachers or even administrators earn so much as the money the school gets from taxes. Rather than investing more effort, and doing that teaching thing, they stop caring only so long as the school passes those tests for state funding. It's a broken system that is getting worse. Sure, literacy rates may be going down, your chances ending up homeless or in prison may be going up, but you get to play videogames in school. :D
chris 07
DDR? They make us play with that game for PE everyday for fun. Id rather play da cross. Before that they made us play with stacking cups game. What happened to good old running and playing soccer? The Wii is funner than DDR and gives more exercise so they should switch to the wii. Then people cant complain about playing video games is bad for you.
Vagrant0
What happened to good old running and playing soccer?Gee, that would require someone to go through the hassle of explaining rules, organizing teams, and supervising. Then there's the potential at hurting someone's self-esteam because their team lost, or they aren't very good at it. You sit someone infront of a machine, and the only one who gets blamed is the machine, afterall it did all the teaching and supervising. Bad machine... chris 07
There are no rules in running and soccer doesnt have a lot of rules. Plus you cant cheat the machine. You could cheat people. :P

First, da cross? You mean lacross, what with the net sticks? Stacking cups...what is that? Running and playing soccer can't be done (well) by everyone, what about the fat or diseased/physically disabled kids? Wii is not funner, it is more fun. Technically, it's teh pwnzorz when compared to DDR, which owns soccer. Video games are good for you is what I've been arguing for years. I almost throw stuff at the tv whenever I hear "78% of us are fat morons because of video games. Eat McDonald's and shop at Walmart instead!" Oh thank you vengeful god of electronics for this tribute to your disciples!
chris 07
Well sorry. By stacking cups I meant the new sport about stacking cups. I say thats real quality s***. I meant da cross. the rules are diffrent and it includes more running.DDR does not pawn soccer! Ever hear about the world cups were tens of millions maybe even more were watching? How many DDR sold? 1 million tops.So was I wrong or were you wrong?
