It was with a corrupted file sector on my 2TB bulk storage drive ("Hegra") that I use for programming retention. This sector was causing the STRINGS file to be corrupted on backup. Now that I've cleaned that drive and marked the corrupted sector from use, I have no problems. I also discovered what was at fault part-way through my posting in this thread; hence the edited post. It's a nonessential storage, is difficult to pull out, and has had corrupted sectors since 2014. Given that it's lasted me a year with very infrequent issues, I think I'll just use it until it burns out instead of advocating waste in favor of negligible improvement to stability.
