GamerChas
I restarted the game trying out very hard mode. For The First Step mission, Preston keeps sending me to Oberland Station instead of Tenpines Bluff. I have a save just before I speak to him after When Freedom calls but it seems like the game has already 'hardcoded' Oberland Station. I have reloaded several times, left the Sanctuary cell and returned but I always get Oberland. My plan is to grab Preston as soon as possible so I can get his perk and then grab another companion. He is too useless later on. It will be a long time before I can do the Oberland quest. I also tried doing the Abernathy Farm mission, but that does not count. The game wants Oberland only.Anyone know a way to change the quest location via the console? Or any other fix?
Moraelin
Hmm... sorry, no idea. Never seen that before. The only scenario that comes to mind where that would happen all the time is if you (or possibly some deathclaw?) already murderized everyone at Tenpints Bluff, so there is no more settlement to help there. Did you download some mod that makes settlers mortal? Because I'm taking a guess that that could cause exactly that kind of side-effect. Edit: hmm, I get an idea, though. And that's usually a bad omen ;) Have you tried just resting for a month before you speak with Preston? Cells should reset in about 20 days, unless you changed that setting with some mod. No idea if it also respawns settlers, but it sounds like you've got nothing to lose there.
RelicDuDe
Whats so bad about Oberland ?... Sneak, Snipe, kill, profit... right ?...
Moraelin
Well, that's how I did it too, but it's a lot harder to sneak there at very low levels. The dude just finished Concord, so I wouldn't expect him to be an accomplished jonin-rank ninja yet ;)

I.. or better yet, Zoey... just danced over there on "Pretty little angel eyes" quite an appropriate song in her case... then she killed the 3 suicide bomber mutants from a distance,, (you think they're religious ?...) And went inside, sneaked to activate the 3 robots in there... and took out a few others without being hit once.. they never even got a shot off... except on the robots who were harassing them all the time... i bet they never even saw Zoey... although one of them called my cutie a "little sneak" which is right on the nose...so he might have seen the red of her skirt, just before he got his head separated from his body by a 50 calibre bullet.... What i wanna say is... its not really that hard once you know how to do it..... and of course, you gotta be a good shot.... but you can get help from 3 robots, and in Zoey's case.. a s#*! load of drugs... Deleted2433418User
I don´t know of anything that might help other than go back to the Vault save and go "let´s do the concord agaaain"..dance.. you might consider spending some time in sanctuary, scrapping and building crap in order to gain some levels and thereby perks in the sneak and killy department..I just restarted on survival and man.. keep low,go slow and be sure to hit the mark..and remember.."He who fights and runs away..will live to fight another day"..which translates to if you're not sure you can take them all in one go,pick off some and retreat, wait and go back..take some more, rinse and repeat.. best advice i can give... Deleted3507349User
The game seems to pick the locations somewhat in advance. You'd probably have to go back tan earlier save than the one you refer to in your original post.
Fatalmasterpiece
So this is an old thread but I recently experienced the same problem. Preston sent me to Oberland Station rather than to help at Tenpines Bluff. It doesn't seem random because the location difference is the exact same as the OP. I do have a mod installed which makes settlers mortal but why would that effect where the quest is sent to? For any matter I've been waiting for Garvey to eventually send my character to Tenpines which I assume he must eventually do since there are only a limited number of settlements that need aid (or are there? haha). Does it really matter if you ever get the Corvega quest or not? It's not like it directly is involved in the Minutemen quests.
GamerChas
Fatalmasterpiece: The problem resolved itself for me. No idea why or how. After posting my question, I shut down the PC and went to bed. The next day, when i loaded my save game from just before talking to Preston, this time he did send me to Tenpines. Maybe the complete shutdown then powering up reset something? I forget why I wanted to get Tenpines quest finished. Corvega does not matter much, but you will not start the Minuteman quests (become the general) until you finish the first quest. PS: Yes, there are limited settlements, but the quests never end - you just get new quests again for the same settlements.
Fatalmasterpiece
Oddly he still hasn't given it to me. Oberland station asked me to clear out Back Street apparel of some raiders, a much easier task than Corvega. After that Garvey never gave me any quests, so I walked to Tenpines where they asked me to clear out a medical center. So I have no idea what is going on with Corvega now bit at least it's not the essential for progressing in the game.
