mwhenry16
Rather than rename a rifle "The big (insert F or something here)", I was trying to figure out what to rename weapons, for example .38 rifles, and what convention to use. I usually end up with 10-12 that I pick up, sell some, experiment with some, and keep some. As I whittle down the keepers, I go nuts trying to rename them in a manner I could easily recall, within the limited number of letter slots the game give us. What do you use? whats your convention when you have A receiver, B stock, C scope, D suppressor, etc., for example?
Ethreon
A_<effect><base weapon> This way they're always on top and I know which effect they have. As far as upgrades go, I can easily see that in workbenches.
mwhenry16
I use caliber to separate, but give me an example of your weapon and effect. Thanks. Edited December 23, 2015 by mwhenry16
TrueBlackWidowmaker
I do a very simple renaming but most effective way to rename thinks: Example for weapons: 1a - Sniper xxxx-whatever 2b - Shotgun xyz 3d - Laser Riffle blabla first digit is the same as use to rebind the weapon to a shortcut. the letter after it is for variations all after that is a matter of taste. My way to rename armor: 1 - Hat 2 - under armor (like vault suit) 3 - harness armor 4 - right arm 5 - left arm 6 - right leg 7 - left leg the second letter stands for: L - leather M - metal C - combat S - synth all after that describes the legendary effect or whatever but is just a matter of taste so you have for example: 1S - Synth Hat of Action 5C - fast Leg of combat ... With this way all armor you are using is displayed first in the list and you have an overview of the material. The trick is just to use a digit as first char - then all your special equipment is always first.
mwhenry16
Thanks, that gives me some ideas too.
Moraelin
Personally I do the following: 1. All names start with a minus sign (a.k.a., dash) so they get sorted at the top. (Or if you keep it short, you can also do fancy stuff like enclose the name between <i> and </i>. HTML code actually works. And < will be sorted at the top too.) 2. Most weapons, if they take more than one type of ammo and/or that ammo can be used by more than one weapon, get the ammo caliber after the dash. That way weapons using the same ammo are sorted together. That way I can compare them. 3. Any legendary effects or what not, go at the end. So my list in the ol' weapons locker might look like: - .308 Marksman Rifle- .308 Auto-Rifle- .50 Revolver- .50 Sniper Rifle- 5.56mm Minigun: Fury- 5mm Assault Rifle: Fire- 5mm Minigun: Frosty and so on. Occasionally I might break the convention, though, when there's really no need to mention the ammo. Like my explosive shotgun is called "- Boomstick"
mwhenry16
I like your setup. I started with the ammo designation, but hadn't done the - thing. I guess what confused me the most was when I had/have 10 different .38 rifles to sort through (later) to compare differences. Perhaps I was overdoing the comparisons, since most of what drops can be easily modified to whatever flavor non-legendary drops have. I like you legendary at the end thing too. Thanks! Moraelin
Well, in the beginning you don't really need to compare them in that much detail, once you realize that you can take the mods clean off any drop, and add them to your one weapon for that niche. Regardless of whether you can MAKE that mod or not. So rather than painstakingly compare if I want my old gun with the scope but crap receiver, or the new one with the hardened receiver, or the silenced version that just dropped, really the only comparison is: is that receiver better than the one on my weapon? If so, I take it off the new weapon and move it to the one weapon I keep. Does a new one have a silencer and mine didn't? Unscrew the silencer off the new one, put it on my old rifle. Does a new one have a cool long scope, and I still had just glowing sights? Cool, unscrew the scope off the rails, put it on my old weapon. So rather than compare the total effect for two dozen .38 pipe rifles, compare the individual components and move all the best ones to the one you want to keep. Then sell or scrap the rest. And of course, once you find a legendary effect you want for that caliber and niche, take all the good stuff off your pimped up old weapon, and move them to the legendary. Like, now I found a cool Instigating pipe pistol with crap components, while my old pipe rifle one was pimped-up with a .308 receiver, finned barrel, recoil-compensating stock, etc? Cool, now I take all those off the old weapon, and move them on the legendary. Still just one weapon to keep.
mwhenry16
Excellent advice, thank you. You saved me sooo much time. I was like Doh! didn't know that! Edited December 24, 2015 by mwhenry16
Moraelin
Took me a long time too. BTW, it's probably clear, but just for the sake of stating it too: the same goes for armour linings or miscs. Though those can depend on armour size, or for PA, of the exact type. Well, usually the material depends on the size, while linings or miscs might not.
