Why I don't use mods anymore

Hi there, newbie here. I just joined a few days ago!

I really love all the content on this site, it looks awesome.

Unfortunately I am reinstalling Skyrim as it no longer works. I'll not be using mods anymore, as I've been trying to get a mod to put my shield on my back instead of my arm, but none of the mods for this work. You'd think there would be a simple easy mod for this. I'll keep a lookout for more "shield mods" for the future but I don't have any high hopes lol.

Sadly after tinkering around for a few days (probably spending more than several hours on it) I've been trying like hell to get this to work by installing a bunch of random extra stuff that's "required" for the mod to work, but the mod didn't end up working anyway (ironically the mods caused my shields to disappear from my inventory, wtf??) when I disabled all my mods and tried to play, the game crashes. I guess what I'm really saying is that I'm really disappointed in how crappy this was lol, and what a waste of time, now that I have to backup and reinstall, ect. ect.

Thanks for reading my long rant, wish it worked.

Welcome to the Nexus!

Hopefully your disappointment will fade and you'll be back to try again. It takes a bit of background knowledge and preparedness to face issues when using mods. A common idea here is, if you haven't managed to completely break your game, you're not trying hard enough! There really are a lot of absolutely fantastic mods here, both game-changing and subtle, that have seriously enhanced my enjoyment of Beth games throughout the years. It may take some reading, research, hard work and late nights fueled by caffeine. You may be forced to learn some skills and things about computers and their use that you would never have needed otherwise. In the end though, once you've got your load order settled and you're grooving on all the free and awesome user-created content, you'll know it is worth it.

Edit: I know firsthand how frustrating it can be getting mods dealing with custom skeletons (yes skeletons, and not how you might think) and animations. I haven't played Skyrim in a couple of years so my memory on these matters is a bit hazy but I feel certain that if you carefully read how to properly setup your game and manager; and pore over the modpage descriptions, documentation, and comments for the mods that you try to use, you'll prevail. Head over to >> this << section of the forums and search / browse for threads related to your problem, if this fails then create a new thread asking nicely for someone to help with your issue.

A brief but useful little guide from the wiki:

http://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/How_to_install_Skyrim_mods

A more detailed guide with some great relevant info from one of our users,

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/56894/?

this guide suggests using Mod Organizer which I won't either discourage or recommend;

NMM is probably better for less knowledgeable users but MO is more powerful and

more likely to stabilize an install using a lot of mods if you want to do a bit of learnin'.

You've probably watched this already but here's a video from a popular and helpful fellow made for those who are new to Skyrim modding: https://youtu.be/RxQ1JN_X-_Y

For sure those mods are sometimes confusing to get going. I been in this modding things for years and I got a bit frustrated at times. But it works. Shields, dual weapons, etc. All works.

Modding is sometimes not for the faint of heart. Many mods are not the "plug and play" we may want but there is many people on the forums that can try to help you. If your done with it, well that is your prerogative. Skyrim mods can not just be turned on and off at a time. There are certain procedures that sometimes have to be done because the saves often keep the data. I realize you are frustrated at present but there are very few mods when something goes horrible wrong don't go back to the one constant, the person using the mods. I've done it, everyone has probably done it. Hopefully after your frustration subsides you will give mods another try. Just remember that reading the directions with the mods is important as they often show how to install AND uninstall.

I got mine working and when I first came to the Nexus it took me two weeks to figure out where my "data" folder was. I was as green as it gets.

So take some times. Watch some of Gopher's videos about mod installation and just start one at a time. If you need help come on the forums and ask on ask a question in the mod thread and chances are people will help.

Good luck and hopefully good modding.

Simple and mods just don't co-exist. Many people new to mods expect to be able to just use mods without actually having to do anything for themselves or learning anything about modding. Mods are made by amateurs and not professionals. Not every mod will 'just work' or will not work with some other mod. Or need some special handling to get it to work. The NMM is an attempt to simplify using mods. But again, every game is different and each game requires special programming to get NMM to work with it (currently 19 games can be modded using NMM) - then, not every mod will install the same way so not every mod can be installed using NMM. And just because it can be installed that doesn't automatically guarantee it will work. READ the documentation for every mod before installing it. It may have some information that you will need to get it to work.
