DredDarkwater77
I am new to the modding game, I stumble confusidly through the GECK, I can fix a few values with FNVedit , Blender and bsa unpacker are a complete mystery. So how does one become one of the greats. Those people who release a mod and it is instant gold? Well the truth is I don't know. I have thown a few lines into the water tryin to get someone with the knowhow to share there secrets. Alas I have come up almost completely empty. I have had a few people go out of their way to lead me in the right direction, but mostly my inquiries are met with silence. There can be many explenations for this, they are busy redily jumps to mind, or is it what I like to call "rockstar syndrome" where they have become so impressed with their own skill that they look down at all of our pothetic attempts holding tight their ego with one hand and jelously protecting their secrets with the other. Truth is I don't know this either. Now I am sure I will draw fire for my audacity my nerve "to complain that someone is better than me" calm yourselves children I am not attacking anyone here and yes I already know how pathetic I am and my rep will be forever shamed, I am simply wondering why their are 5000 requests for help and 50 replies? My limited knowledge is primarily hardware and as such I can intuitivly predict how some programs will interact with each other. Any help I can give I do and many of you out there do the same. Do I think that any time that a person has a question we should all drop what we are doing and fall in? no. But a person should never be ridiculed or attacked for a lack of knowledge, once upon a time you were a dumb a$$ too. In an environment where we see no consiquence for the things we do or say we should work twice as hard to hold to the standard we would treat each other in person. Now if you really want to complain I can give you my address, my hours are 9 to 6 so bring a lunch and your own streatcher. For all other modders thank you I value all your work for our little community no matter if you are a 3 time file of the month winner (these guys are usually really cool to talk to) or someone who made the lowly BB gun fire mini nukes. LHammonds
So how does one become one of the greats.Reading, learning, experimenting and sharing I suppose. It sure can't happen overnight. Those people who release a mod and it is instant gold?I don't know either. Some people release things to be enjoyed by the masses, others release things to be enjoyed by a few and some release things that they made for their own enjoyment. I do know that if you enjoyed creating the mod and put a lot of creative thought into it, it will be enjoyed by many others. Whether or not you call that "gold" is up to you. Release a halfway decent naked female mod and you will be surrounded by tons of male booby lovers. Not sure if that is the kind of attention you'd want though. I am simply wondering why their are 5000 requests for help and 50 replies? It is quite possible that the majority of those requests are not "requests for help" but more "requests that somebody else do it for me" threads. In that case, there simply isn't that many people who #1 have the same interest in seeing the request done by themselves, #2 have the skill to take on such request, #3 have the time to take on such a request, #4 even saw the request. Most modders I know got their start in modding BECAUSE nobody would do the request they wanted. So they picked up a painting program and learned how to create textures or installed Blender and learned how to model or dug into the Construction Set / GECK and learned how to make quests, homes or whatnot. I don't mod Fallout but I do for Oblivion. I try to help answer questions and point people to the right material whenever I can but I don't have all the answers and I'd say that I'd only know the answer to maybe 5 to 10% of the questions asked. Some people think "gosh, I thought he knew EVERYTHING about modding" but the real answer is that modders only know the answers to things they have DONE or READ which lead back to my 1st reply above. My limited knowledge is primarily hardware and as such I can intuitivly predict how some programs will interact with each other. Any help I can give I do and many of you out there do the same.I don't recall your name as being familiar in the Hardware forum. But a person should never be ridiculed or attacked for a lack of knowledgeAttacking other members is against the forum rules. Easily fixed by using the REPORT button. once upon a time you were a dumb a$$ too.And by choosing these words, is that any way to get sympathy to your plight? I don't think so. majinshinsa
i agree with LHammonds. im new to this and i learn by taking the questions people have and try to figure it out myself if i can. if not then someone may answer it and i can see where i went wrong, i have been doing this for a month or so and have barely scratched the surface (and i only work with code, i am not a graphical person)
davidlallen
I have two FNV quest mods which are in the "top twenty" based on endorsements. I started modding FNV in December. My experience is, there are no magic secrets which suddenly catapult you from nothing, to having a "top five" mod. I recommend you start small. Think of something small which you would enjoy playing; make it; *release* it. Then pick something bigger. Too many mod projects "think big" and start with a huge design. Sometimes the team sticks it out and releases something, but not usually. The best way to learn is with experience. If you have specific questions, ask here and somebody will answer. If you have general questions like "teach me all the secrets", it is hard to write any good response.
Quetzlsacatanango
Easiest way to figure out how to do something is to find somewhere in the vanilla game where they did what you want to do, and see how they did it.
rickerhk
Top reasons I don't respond to a post:1. Don't know - like LHammonds said, the only things I know are the things i've done and read about.2. Not enough information was given3. Don't have time4. The poster appears to be a beginner trying to do something advanced right off the bat, and should start with the tutorials.5. I have answered the same question 20 times. Sometimes I will respond again anyway.6. I have responded to the poster in the past, 2 or 3 times and got no feedback. A lot of times I don't really know for sure but have a good idea (I think) and feedback is really important to me. I've noticed these things help in getting a response (In addition to being polite), and show that you are making an effort:1. If you are having problems with a script, post enough of it so that we can help you.2. For modeling/texture problems, post screenshots.3. Explain what you have tried to get your results, so people don't waste time suggesting it, or can point out something you missed when you tried it. These types of posts I ignore completely:1. I'm starting this huge overhaul project and am building a team.2. Teach me how to make (fill in the blank)
DredDarkwater77
My intent with this post was not to insult or agrivate anyone simply to start a conversation that would help those of us who are new to this understand what it really takes to make a mod, and what it is we are asking for when we do ask for help. When for example I ask for scripting help, and recieve 2 responses, the first directiond to a tutorial (helpful) the other "if you can't figure it out you shouldn't be modding" (not so helpful) Most of the individuals I have interacted with here have been at least understanding of my software ineptitude but then there are some... Thanks for all the feedback keep it coming can't learn without being schooled.
chucksteel
DreadDarkWater77, I hole heartedly agree with everyone who has responded so far! The only thing I can add is, You should start a project your passionate about, something you believe in and, something you intend to grow! Don't expect to become a "Rock Star" over night! I've only released one "Serious" Mod. The Day "The DCInteriors Project" won file of the month was the highlight of my modding career and, It's ben in the top 20 nexus mods, since release. (Based on endorsements,) I didn't start out with the intent to become a "Rock Star" nor, did I expect to even get noticed. I was only building something I wanted to see, then, It grew and, grew. Once you build something and, get some positive or, negative feedback, you'll decide to ether make it better or simply give up, to let the "Rock Stars" be, "Rock Stars"! Don't try to build the mod you think everyone else wants, build the mod you want! Lastly, And, I don't mean this to sound rude or, off in any way but, you ended your post with "P.S. I can't spell"!!!!!!! That just tells me your a bit lazy! I'm freaking "Dyslexic!" I have to struggle and, take the time to read and, right my posts in a coherent fashion! You may not know about this little known feature of the computing world, it's called "Spell Check!" If English was your second or, third language I could forgive you but, you copped out and, said simply "I can't spell!!". This makes me believe you wouldn't put the effort in to building a quality mod but, as I said, Not trying to be rude or, off! Prove me wrong!!!!!! http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/woot.gif P.S. "Spell check" doesn't check my grammar so, I'm sure thats all messed up. (My own, personal "Cop Out!") P.P.S. Many of us are here simply looking to help, where and, when we can "Davidlallen" is a perfect example! I wish I could keep up with him, (Guess I need to start huffing JET!) every help post I look at it seems he has many more action points than me! He's always beating me to the punch! http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/wallbash.gif(I'ed Cut him, if I could http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/whistling.gif) chuck

Again, I wasn't trying to be rude, If you really want adult help sign on to the "Beth Treads", go to the GECK portion and post a help request!
