Septim741
I quoted this from BGS Forums: Over the course of the day, over 400 pages have been changed to simply be a list of links to porn and viagra. This is by far the worst vandalization/spam attack the Wiki has ever seen. These were clearly perpetrated by bots, who take advantage of the fact that there is absolutely no checks for who creates an account - you don't even need to supply a valid e-mail address, there's no "type the characters you see here", nothing. The Wiki gets spammed or vandalized an average of four or five times a day. One of a handful of regulars there always changes the page back, and marks the offender appropriately. This is done in the hope that the user will be banned. However, the more we revert pages to their unspammed form, the more attacks we receive. As regular users, we are powerless to stop it. We need admins from Bethesda to do something. Unfortunately, it's been months, so far as anyone can tell, since anyone from Bethesda has so much as looked at the Wiki. I have e-mailed Bethesda and Scruggs has PMed Gstaff, the Community Manager for these boards, but whether or not we will see a response any time soon is anyone's guess. In the meantime, I expect the attacks to keep on happening. As I've said, there are only a handful of us to defend the Wiki, and we have been overrun. It appears that reverting pages only triggers more bot attacks. Therefore, we can only stand back and watch for the time being. There is no telling how many pages will be completely unusable until Bethesda fixes things. The Wiki is no longer a valid resource for any information regarding modding; hopefully Bethesda's actions will fix that. In conclusion, Until Bethesda does something about it, the CS Wiki cannot be relied upon for any information, as a substantial portion of the site has been taken over by spammers. Dark0ne
All the more reason for me to get on with my tutorial section changes, huh?
Septim741
That would be nice, Dark0ne. And I just now thought to post a link to their thread. http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.ph...709728&st=0 There. A lot of people are suggesting that the modding community migrate to UESP, and a lot of people are mad at Bethesda for doing nothing up to this point. As of yet there's been nothing regarding this issue on the Bethesda site.
Povuholo
Mmm... I don't like this. Luckily there are still many pages that aren't affected. The scripting and A.I. section is intact, and that's the only thing I need right now. But that's just me. And UESP is trying to migrate the wiki to their site: Link. I hope that works out. Bethesda has replied: Hey guys, I got into the office this morning and just read the PM from Dragoon recently. I've alerted relevant folks and hopefully they can get something done about this. The impact the wiki and your contributions have had on the sustained enjoyment of Oblivion is not lost on me. Thanks for all you've done to tend to it - I'll be happy to let you know if our network tech ninjas come up with something.-----------------------------------Don't worry, we will make sure the CS wiki is kept free from vandals. We use the CS wiki as well (we originally created it for internal use during Oblivion), so it has pretty high priority. I don't know what "steps" will need to be taken, but you don't need to worry that it will get neglected.
Dark0ne
Looks like Bethesda will keep it under control. Not good when this happens over a weekend since the employees won't be working!
Vagrant0
Just incase they don't manage to do anything other than offer words of encouragement, does anyone have a collection of saved pages for the scripting, AI, and tutorials from before this mess? I'd try saving them individually, but that's alot of pages, was wondering if someone had already done it, or knew an easier way.
crazydave
Mabey someting as important as this should be backed up on a site that isn't so vandall friendly.
Vagrant0
Mabey someting as important as this should be backed up on a site that isn't so vandall friendly. It is backed up, or else they wouldn't have anything to revert to. I was really looking for something which would act as default reference for all the stuff that doesn't need to exist in wiki format since most of the information is complete enough, and there isn't much that would ever be added. Areas like scripting functions, package definitions, and some of the more basic How-to stuff would be part of this group. I'd like to believe that they intend to do something meaningful about this, but would like to see an additional solution available so that modders don't suddenly get screwed over... Maybe a funtion catalogue on TesSource? Doesn't have to be flashy, just the list of functions, what they're supposed to do, and an example of their usage.
