It says i need to upgrade oblivion-how?

If it is so, it is so, usually. Check your game version. You can see that in title menu screen. The latest(I'd say, last) version is 1.2.0416 and unless the mod you want to use is very old, released mods require latest version to work.

My guess is, you need the latest and greatest patch. There are two different versions, (aside from regional versions as well.....) one for the game WITH Shivering Isles, and one for the game WITHOUT shivering isles. Need to pay attention and get the correct patch for your game region as well. All are available on the Bethesda website. I can't direct link, because, for some silly reason, there is age verification....... I really don't see the point of that.... :D Latest version is 1.2.0416.

First. If you have either Vista or Win7 windows UAC will block most mods IF you install Oblivion to the default location.

To fix this, Uninstall Oblivion and reinstall outside of the UAC protected program files folders. Recommended C:\Games\Oblivion.

Then, if you downloaded your game from anywhere except Steam or unless you have a DVD version. You are out of luck on any mods that require OBSE as it will not work with them - including many stolen (pirate) versions.

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.
