How much are these 2 computers worth?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have 2 computers and I am hoping to sell on craigslist or my local trades newspaper since I have no use for them. Both of them are fairly dated by hey, they're still good for an everyday pc. I'm not really sure how much they're worth so I'm hoping you guys could help me value them.

First unit:

  •
  • Pentium D 820 2.8ghz
  • 2gb ddr2 ram
  • Geforce 9600gt
  • 120gb Seagate Barracuda hdd
  • Gigabyte matx motherboard (not sure of the model)
  • LG dvd/cd burner
  • 500w Cooler Master psu
  • black Gigabyte matx case
  • floppy drive
  • win xp pro

Second unit:

  •
  • Sempron 2600+ 1.6ghz
  • 512mb ddr ram
  • Geforce fx5200 (with a customized OC'ed bios)
  • 20gb Western Digital hdd
  • Asus k8v-mx atx motherboard
  • Asus dvd/cb burner
  • 400w raidmax psu
  • black atx case with stealth cd doors
  • floppy drive
  • win xp pro

Thanks.

Before selling be absolutely sure there is nothing on the hard drives that can be traced back to you. Best case, reformat the hard drives. If you want to sell them with an operating system you may not want to do this though as you will not get as much for them.

If you have the system disks that came with them, go ahead and reformat, then reinstall the original Operating system.

Otherwise, use the windows remove program list from the windows control panel (remove programs in XP) to completely remove everything except the Windows files. Then run a cleanup program that securely cleans empty space to prevent someone from recovering the files

Yeah, I'll do a reformat before it even leaves my house. I have the first one up on an auction site. I hope someone hits the reserve. :)

Don't just format, wipe them properly, there are plenty of free programs that will do it.

Do a Department of Defense write over on all drives before restoring factory data. this writes all 1's then all 0's to the drive through a couple reformatting passes making it very difficult to collect anything useful.

As for pricing, depending on severity of usage, I wouldn't expect anything more than $250 for the first unit (which is still somewhat passable by current standards and could be a semi-decent machine for a small family/college student without too many demands or as a bridge between a broken machine and getting money for something better) and about $80 for the second unit(which is maybe only good for spare parts). But again, a lot of it depends on location and how much they were used.
