Its boring once you bet it. But it pretty much is a strait up shooter with quests to kind of guide the player. Also there is a lot of loot as the guns are actually randomly generated in game by a part rule set. So Litterly you will see more guns then just about any game out there, yet these are kind of similar model wise.

MP is the same as single player, same story same everything, only differance is that MP cause MOBs to have higher health/damage resistances, and increased numbers. On the flip side Loot is also improved. So if you go into 4 player MP and get this epic gun there it is 10x better then you get solo. So if you take that gun into solo play you will pretty much walk your way to the end.

Borderlands is one of my favourite recent games, so I'd say get it, but that's not much of a reason so I'm going to help build an actual case to support the game.

First, it's really only boring if you try to play it solo, so get some friends to play with you. The main pull of the game is its co-op, which is just the main game but with buddies. The premise is pretty simple: you're treasure hunters/mercs, you like guns and money, so you kill stuff and complete quests to earn guns and money.

As for the game type? Gearbox advertises it as a "role playing shooter," and the rpg part of it is pretty small. Killing stuff and completing quests nets you experience and when you level up you just pick a skill to upgrade. It's simple but there's a lot of options and opportunity for experimentation and optimization. While it IS semi-linear, I wouldn't say that it's "free roam." You do have an end goal, but each new main area is pretty large and has a lot of missions to complete in it.

I don't know what you're looking to play it on, but the GOTY edition is like, 30 bucks on steam (regular is 20). I'd say it still looks great for a two year old game and it's nice as a way to kill a few hours.

(I have some stuff to do but I might add some more to this later)

Well, then you're missing out on a hugely good, and very funny game.

It's cartoonish because it's very much in the genre of comedy. Borderlands is a very very silly game-very violent, even thuggish, but it doesnt even try to take itself seriously. You play as one of four utterly stereotypical mercenaries(the crazy/psychotic one, the military boring one, the huge brutish one, the girly hot one who teleports) and the basic idea of the game is to get rich while leveling up.

Levels are begat by shooting things and doing quests, and money is gained by shooting things and doing quests. On face value it's a pretty good game-the main quest is abnormaly long for an FPS and once you finish it, you reset to the begining at full level gained and do the all important playthrough #2. It' vital to do both playthroughs to have a character of high enough level to play online, but once you reach about 20 ish you can play online and do fairly well.

The other vital thing is that you level up, get gear, and complete quests when online-playthrough #2 should be co-op, that's the point of it. The other thing about the second playthrough is that it opens up the side quests, and while Borderlands has six million guns, it has almost that number ofd sidequests aswell. Problem is they're hidden and dont show up on minimap, you have to hunt them down, but once you do, they're well worth it, and tend to go beyond the monotonous kill-x-of-y that so many RPGs have degenerated into. The world is huge, requiring a vehicle to get around if you cant teleport, and has fairly good variety of scenery aswell, you also will be sent to every corner of the zone aswell, so you get to enjoy it. Just keep an eye out, some epic loot spawns in hard to reach places, unguarded if you can reach it,

Enemy variety is pretty good, the foul-mouthed Bandits are hilarious to torture(many weapons are Elemental-they have a random chance, the higher the quality the higher the chance, to inflict a spectacular "elemental effect" which always result in incredibly gory deaths, pareticularly fun to do to the Bandits) Skags are annoying but drop phat lewt, Rakks are annoying but very satisfying to pick off, Rakk-Hives are simply epic, and Lancers are... lancers, And simply a pain in the arse. But they do drop epic loot.

The gameplay itself is absolutely excellent, the online is fantastic and while it takes a good sized time commitment, since the fun begins as a reward for finishing playthrough #1(which you shoulds simply rush through, ignoring the side missions), the DLC is excellent, and the graphics, though cartoonish, are quite artistic in places. Bare with the graphics, this game is too much of a gem to set aside simply because of graphics.

A friendly bit of advice though: ignore all the other classes, the Siren is the only one worth playing, at top level the teleport become the ultimate tool of mischief, and her ability to make virtualy all elementals 100% effewct chance is vastly useful. She also has the best class items and a is proven to get better loot ddrops. If not the Siren, then Brick, Brick isnt too useful, but his dialogue is priceless and he's hilarious fun to play as(a huge steroidal bear of a man, armed with a bazooka and his fists)

The visuals are actually one of the best things, in a time of limited colour palettes (grey+brown+bloom="realistic") Borderlands was a refreshing change. Its unique look (because of how it's done it's not technically cel-shading) is one of the reasons why I think it still looks so good after two years, which I guess isn't that long of a time. Not to mention that the special elemental kill animations on human enemies never get old.

Furthermore, to simplify what Vindekarr said, the visuals reflect the attitude of the game. It doesn't take itself too seriously, this is a game in which you get revolvers that can shoot acid. Rocket launchers that shoot electric spread rockets. Shotguns that HOLY CRAP IT SHOOTS ROCKETS! (This kinda stuff is why I love Bulletstorm too, holy crap that game is fantastic.)

Also if you have to pick only one DLC, "Secret Armory of General Knoxx" is an easy choice. Although they're all pretty good for their own reasons.

In short, I think my main point is that Gearbox made a Borderlands keeping in mind that games are supposed to be fun. Probably why I'm so excited for DNF in a few months.

@Vindekarr Brick is pretty useful, but Sirens FTW. *fist bump* I mean, once you get Phoenix and all the "let's make cooldown a non-issue" skills you can pretty much rapid-fire Phasewalk.
