  1. 1. Which do you prefer?

I don't mind what gender the lead character is, so long as it's believable. ;)

That said, though...when I play CRPGs, I prefer to play female leads. I'd much rather watch a woman's behind run across the screen than a man's. :whistling:

I don't really identify with my PCs so much as I treat them as characters whose story I'm telling through the game... that said, I have a preference for female PCs who specialize in stealth, marksmanship, and technical skills (hacking, lockpicking, smithing, and so forth), have high intelligence and perception stats, and dress themselves in practical lightweight armor or clothes. Not coincidentally most of the lead characters in most of my stories are also female and often specialize in similar areas.

As for why... it varies from game to game. Sometimes the PC's situation has parallels to a story I'm working on with a female lead; sometimes I just find female PCs easier on the eyes. Sometimes I rationalize that preference by saying I like the change in perspective since I'm a hairy ape of a man without much of a feminine side. All I know is that I like playing female characters in my games when I have the choice, and they generally don't run around in bikinis unless they're going for a swim.

Those are very interesting replies, indicative of individual thinking and security of self...so this reinforces the view that I tend to think that the posters here are representative of an Elite and therefore don't represent the average gamer for various reasons.

Would you agree? How much do you think the masses share our views? You think the average 12-25 year old could identify with a laser-slinging hottie on a personal level, or a Tarna-type warrior-ess? (just what is the biggest age group of video game buyers, anyway?)

Depends on the story and the character design.

Believe it or not the sex of the character should matter in the story imo. If I'm playing as a female cowboy in 1897 I would like a good reason why other than it being a cheap gimmick.

I also don't care to play as a samurai/ninja/warrior/whatever wearing nothing but a shoelace they jokingly call a "bikini."

This is a good point.

Fallout NV tried to do that but failed terribly IMO.

I love more a female than a male. There has been by far a disproportionate level of male heroes in our culture. I remember watching, when I was a child, cowboy and indian movies where the women in the movie would throw the rifle to the man to shoot it, instead of shooting the dog gone thing themselves. I'm not an activist or a sexists, but I can't stand to watch something that doesn't make sense, and most of those 50's and 60's shows, especially the westerns were writhe with that.
