Maharg67
0006LUCKY EDDIE Something dark and fast flashed across the faces of both moons and was gone as quickly as it had appeared. Lucky Eddie was not pleased by what he sensed of the nature of something. It was daedric in nature and was powerful enough to be of the middling daedra. It was a hidroo daedragon instead of a more common, less powerful lodroo daedragon. Deadragons had not come to Tamriel before and had not been part of Mehrunes Dagon’s attempted invasion. The Empire was going to have a hard time dealing with them as would other Tamriellans. The gaedra admitted that they were searching for some of their people who had vanished in the area. The gaedra, all too aware of the vulnerabilities of their hidden colony, were trying to learn more about the disturbing events in the area. The other small force of gaedra investigators, being all shaperfolk except for two elementrols, one of fire and one of spark, had sent their last message from the long abandoned Fort Wooden Hand. Then they had failed to send two scheduled messages in a row. Gaedra Grand Elders had convened, along with other leaders, and had authorized another expedition at once. Lucky Eddie had long put away his multiple-revolver when he formed a temporary alliance with the shaperfolk. That night he sat with the two hounds and sometimes scratched them. Shaperfolk took turn at sentry duty but Lucky Eddie was alert even when he slept for just a couple hours. Lucky Eddie carefully carved small figurines from good wood that gaedric scout had found for him. They were of an owl, a ferret like animal known as a werren, an ogre, a woman Imperial Highway Guard and even himself. They were of excellent quality so that the shaperfolk were very impressed. So he gave away all of the figurines to the shaperfolk and then carved exact duplicates of them for himself that he put into the multiple-backpack. He took samples of air, dirt, water from a gaedric canteen, plant material, doggy fur and blood from the wary gaedra. He slipped the glass vials (actually not really glass) into circular slots in his multiple-cube that he took out of his special backpack. After a few second a panel on the cube lit up with glowing, flowing, coloured patterns that he studied carefully. One of the hounds passed wind in the shameless fashion of dogs. Evarta sat down even as she waved her hand in front of her nose. “So what did you find?” He looked up at her. “These are only baseline studies meant to create a set of data to later relate other samples to, to create a good comparative study later.” She snorted. “I know that much.” Lucky Eddie nodded. “Sorry! Very slight magical toxins left behind by the less wise use of arcane and elemental magic. Also some slight magical traces of more dangerous necromantic, daedric and other magic uses I can not identify. I suspect one is an odd variation of orthodox necromantic magic and another is almost daedric in nature. Lesser undead creatures and lesser daedra have been summoned quite close to this spot. That is in the direction of Fort Wooden Hand where your people vanished. Now you can ask you hidden people to come out of hiding.” The shaperfolk woman nodded, apparently unsurprised that he had discovered the truth. Maharg67
0007LUCKY EDDIE The Empire was weakened by longer term problems, the attempted invasion by Mehrunes Dagon and by the Dark Troubles that had followed it. So the Empire no longer had the strength to rule most of Tamriel. The Empress was also withdrawing army, naval and aeronaval forces from former Imperial Provinces to further strengthen her own position. Negotiations between Imperial and now foreign envoys were taking place in the Imperial City. Exceptions were some coastal Imperial Enclaves to serve Imperial trade and oceanic interests including naval. Old forts were being repaired and upgraded while in some places new forts were being constructed. These border and inland forts were being equipped with magical forms of communications but the process was slow for magical resources in the Empire were not abundant enough. Highways were being repaired or even upgraded as were bridges, courier-posts and outposts. Stage-coaches were becoming more common as new routes were opened up. Plans had been made to rebuild, upgrade and even expand Fort Wooden Hand and yet, officially, nothing no work had begun there yet. When morning came they set out following a narrow winding dirt road through the foothills that led roughly towards the fort. They did not ride the horses but led them for they were aware of the need to be stealthy and also there were not enough horses for all to ride. Why, because the shaperfolk had only managed to buy eight horses from local people. Horses of good riding quality had never been common in the Jerall Foothills but recently three horse-farms had been attacked and all their horses stolen. It had been a big blow to the local folk be they villagers, farmers, foresters, hunters or others. The local Sheriff was investigating and were Imperial Marshals and genuine Imperial Highway Guards. Now fifteen shaperfolk moved on foot as guards or hunters, many leading horses, while with them paced the big hounds and five elementrols being of one of life, one of flame, one of phase and two of solar. These took the appearance of human hunters but it was illusion. Lucky Eddie would pause at times to take samples and to check them with his multiple-cube. He also gathered plants such as motherwort, wild potato and lady’s mantle along with fungi such as clouded funnel cap and some fruits such as blackberries. Small wild potatoes also went into his multiple-backpack. When they paused to rest he passed out from the backpack small foodcakes that were pleasantly tasteful and quite nutritional. Even the horses, hounds and elementrols devoured them. Much of the organic matter he had gathered, including the small wild potatoes, had gone into the making of the foodcakes. When he told the gaedra this they decided to do some gathering of their own as they went along so as to assist in the making of more foodcakes. Doing so would mean less use of their rations. From the multiple-canteen came various drinks for all including some that was poured for the hounds and the horses. Even the elementrols had some of a special quality. Evarta admitted what Lucky Eddie already knew, that the hounds were actually gaedra shaperbeasts but they still liked being scratched behind the ear. Maharg67
0008LUCKY EDDIE Lucky Eddie sensed death and destruction first but soon all of them were smelling horrible smells and looking at smoke spiraling up from a location ahead of them. The bandit camp had been hit hard and fast. Berserker bandits had been slaughtered with rapid efficiency. Arcane magic devices and direct spells had been used but also just the stabbing, slashing and striking of non magical weapons. But this raid had been carried out for more reasons than just slaughter. Berserker bandits had their brainbugs removed. Other items had been removed, including some dead bandit bodies. There had been looting of useful and more valuable items. Perhaps the attackers wanted to be seen as other, more powerful bandits destroying competition. Lucky Eddie walked amongst the dead, amongst the collapsed tents, and reached out with his multiple senses. Cleverly hidden under a fair sized boulder he found a steel reinforced hard wooden lidbox with a high quality steel lock. He opened it in seconds by tapping on it. Inside were three leather bound books, vials of strange blood red liquid, brainbug larvae in special glass globes and some bizarre, disturbing looking steel devices. He promised Evarta he would share all knowledge with her and her people before he relocked the carefully packed lidbox and put it away into his multiple-backpack. Then he took out a set of glasses with multiple metal frames and lens of different kinds that could be adjusted in many ways. They looked weird and wonderful, which they were designed to do so as to impress people while hiding the true nature of the device. He carefully studied various marks on the ground and other clues left behind by those who had attacked the bandits. Taking and examining samples with the multiple-box and running the multiple-wand over areas caused him to come to a firm conclusion. Blades had attacked the encampment, that is BladeAgents disguised as bandits. They had come with horses, battledogs and clawhawks but also with the backup of two BladeMages who were disguised as bandit-mages. Except with them had been wildfolk creatures known as bobblins or the small high treefolk. It was true then that wildfolk were working with Imperial Forces, that some kind of treaty had been formed. He sensed that they were being watched by a trio of bobblins hidden with amazing skill in treetops. Bobblins were deadly with bows, with throwing blades and with booby-traps but they were a defensive aggressive people. They were a people who had once lived across much of Tamriel but like many wildfolk, beastfolk and tribals they had been driven back to the more isolated semiwilderness. There they had allied themselves with other wildfolk, with beastfolk and tribal folk to keep their sanctuaries free of intrusion and exploitation. Thus they dominated much of the Jerall Mountains and other such areas despite various Imperial and other efforts to change that. They had also destroyed many daedric invaders, thus unintentionally helping the Empire to survive. It was about that moment that Lucky Eddie realized that he had been to that super continent and that world before. With a frown he felt the slightly painful rush of old memories and knowledge flood into his mind. What he learned, astonished him. Maharg67
0009LUCKY EDDIE After getting the others to be still and quiet, the horses happy to chomp at the grass, he drew out a colourful blanket from his multiple-backpack, spread it out on the ground and placed on it three big colourful feathers, three small polished river stones, three green leaves, a steel bladed knife, a small hand-mirror and three foodcakes carefully wrapped in a thin, strong wrapper-leaf. Then he sat waiting quietly for some time before he began to chant softly in a sing song manner. Even as he did a bobblin warrior slipped quietly into view, like an upright monkey person lightly covered with short fur and with a long, thin tail. She came and sat warily on the other side of the blanket facing him. Lucky Eddie then smiled, being careful not to show too many teeth, and then he spoke fluently in bobbline, the bobblin common language. It was a hard language for humans to learn but he showed no trouble. “Greeting daughter of many mothers and fathers but most of all the great mother herself, the Earth Goddess. I seek here only to give you and your people a message. I am Lucky Eddie who was known to your people as Eddiosano once, a very long time ago, when I was a bobblin.” He expected her to doubt him but instead she surprised him. “I am TreuTebu and you are late. We were expecting you at least at least a year ago. Irmaster, the False Emperor, proclaimed your coming reappearance on this world by sending us a message written in the dried blood of one of our people on leather made from his skin.” “That would be his style.” Lucky Eddie grimaced. “He has no ability to predict my comings and goings, which means somebody else or something else did so.” She looked down at his display. “Over the last centuries we have reduced the greetings to one small river stone, one leaf and one feather with no gifts needed. Still, the hand-mirror, steel knife and the food that I can smell is quite delicious, would make fine tributes to our local matriarch. Which, coincidentally, is me. I will make sure they are used well by my people. Hand-mirrors make grooming oneself easier and make good sun flash signal devices. That looks to be a very well made knife with excellent hardness, sharpness and balance. As for the foodcakes, we have written that Eddiosano used to create them with his magical backpack. Also you were not a bobblin but an intrinsic shapechanger as you are most likely now. Also you were, in our terms, here not so long ago when you helped to create the Sanctuaries and to defend them against an Imperial invasion that was so badly beaten it was stricken from Imperial historical records.” Yes, he remembered it fully now though it remained a memory and not a fully relived experience as he could do with a little extra effort. “You are working with the Empire now, with the Blades?” The local matriarch of the bobblins nodded sharply. “Disturbing events have been occurring in these foothills. Daedra have been spotted, including daedragons flying above and lesser daedra stalking through the forests. Yet there are stranger creatures and they seem to be fighting the daedra when ever they meet. We were approached by the Blades to work with them in learning what is really going on. We captured strange shapeshifting folk but have learned nothing from them except that they are gaedra shaperfolk from their underground homeland.” Edited August 2, 2011 by Maharg67
Maharg67
0010LUCKY EDDIE “That is true enough though truer with some Daedric Deities, and their followers, than with others. They can be trusted. Are they at Fort Wooden Hand?” Lucky Eddie asked expecting it would be so. “That is where the captured gaedra stopped sending messages to their people.” TreuTebu shook her head sharply, bobblin fashion. “They were captured at Fort Wooden Hand, yes, but they are in the ancient, once cursed fortress of SancreTor. The Blades are in the process of reclaiming that great, mostly underground fortress, that is so sacred to them. None were killed but two shaperfolk were wounded, one badly, in the fight that they were captured. One BladeGuard was killed. The Blades assumed they were some kind of daedric shapeshifting creatures though we bobblins told them that this was unlikely. BladeKnight Caldell is a fine warrior but not such a fine commander. He is the grandson of the famed BladeChampion Baurus who helped save the Empire from the attempted invasion by Mehrunes Dagon and this is probably the only real reason he achieved his high rank.” Lucky Eddie frowned and knew he was remembering Baurus. Yes, Lucky Eddie in a former incarnation had been the one who had been met by the Emperor in the prison cell where no prisoner was supposed to be. Back then he was a woman, was named Joaddie, and she had taken the Amulet of Kings to Jauffre. After that she had carried out many quests to do with the daedric invasion, the threat of Umaril the Unfeathered and the problems of Shivering Isles. In the dark times following the death of Martin, the Empire had suffered a kind of scattered civil war until the Empress Herculine Septum had arisen to the Dragon Throne. Until the False Emperor had arisen to challenge her, her claim to the throne had not been disputed in any major fashion. Exhausted and ready for rejuvenation-renewal, Jeoddie had vanished when the new Empress had taken the Dragon Throne. Lucky Eddie nodded slowly. “So this BladeKnight Caldell ordered an attack on the gaedra with out first demanding explanation from them or even surrender?” “He led the attack himself and was lightly wounded.” She responded. “We wildfolk know about the hidden homeland of the gaedra. The gaedra suspect that we do so. We have played a game of pretend. Now it is time we wildfolk spoke with the gaedra as would the beastfolk and tribals. BladeKnight Caldell must be convinced the free the shaperfolk and not to fight the two gaedra elementrols that are stalking the fortress as they try to free their people. If daedra are invading once more than the Empire will need the gaedra as allies. During Mehrunes Dagon’s attempted invasion the gaedra ambushed and destroyed a large force of daedra and closed three OblivionGates. We of the Sanctuaries Union also did much damage to the daedra.” Lucky Eddie looked up at the moons and the celestial spheres. “Gaedra went to Havenaedra to accept sanctuary there as offered by the kaedra, their other cousin peoples apart from the daedra. Question is, what is a colony of gaedra doing down here?” Edited August 2, 2011 by Maharg67
Maharg67
0011LUCKY EDDIE The shapeshifter group leader came and sat beside Lucky Eddie. She frowned softly. “Oblivionaedra, the Realms of Oblivion, have become unstable for some unknown reason. This was the main reason that Mehrunes Dagon attempted his last invasion and why others of the Daedric Princesses allowed him to ‘burrow’ their lesser daedra. Oblivionaedra and Havenaedra are bonded and the growing destabilization of the Realms of Oblivionaedra is now badly influencing Havenaedra. Kaedra are also here, sharing our colony.” Lucky Eddie was not sure he liked that idea at all. Kaedra were more advanced, more powerful but also more aggressive than the gaedra and in this way matched the daedra. The daedra and kaedra were also ancient enemies. Many of the peoples of Tamriel did not know that either the kaedra or gaedra existed. There were many other facts that they did not know about. Evarta frowned. “The strange creatures that have been seen fighting daedra are not wildfolk or tribal shapeshifters or beastfolk or kaedra or we gaedra. Nobody seems to know what they are. They have strange and terrible weapons.” Lucky Eddie remembered the Deadlands of Mehrunes Dagon where the larva oceans were slowly drowning and burning the lands. Only three continents remained of what had been a super continent and many cities, forts and other settlements had been lost to the Molten Oceans. He remembered the troubles of the Shivering Isles, another Realm of Oblivion. He turned to Evarta. “The Kaedric Elders have forced your people to join in a campaign against the daedra.” With obvious reluctance, she nodded. “We were foolish to let kaedra share our colony here. We let our compassion over ride our good survival judgement. Now the kaedra have taken over the colony. We have become little more than their basic soldiers, servants, workers and specialists. The kaedra do not desire Tamriel but wish to find a new homeland away from the Tamriellans. They speak of another super continent on the other side of the world from Tamriel. They wish to take us along with them but promise us a homeland of our own where we do not have to serve the kaedra. We gaedra are not sure we trust such promises.” Lucky Eddie cursed softly in some languages that the others did not understand but which were very effective for cursing in. “They speak of Matriel of the Doomnamese peoples. Not wise at all. Best to leave those peoples and their super continent well enough alone. The Divines isolated that realm for very good reasons. They even removed the knowledge of its existence from the minds and records of the peoples of Tamriel including the various mer peoples, the false elves.” Basically it came down to the fact that the Sanctuaries people, the gaedra and the kaedra, along with the Blades, did not seem to know what was really going on in that region. Some more gaedra came out of the forests in small groups until there was a fair sized force. Some were non shaperfolk, human like gremora. The similarity of names and-or natures of certain daedra and gaedra was far from being a coincidence. For example the gremora had once been dremora who had served Mehrunes Dagon but who had turned against his insanity. The dremora despised the gremora, seeing them as both blasphemers and traitors, and had vowed to exterminate them all. Maharg67
0012LUCKY EDDIE The gaedra now gave up on their disguises as Imperial Highway Guards and all shaperfolk and gremora became garbed as Gaedric Warguards. They kept the magical weapons but had new magical armour plus some zipdart-guns being pistols, carbines and rifles. Zipdart guns could fire many zipdarts quickly but were fairly limited in range and power but the semisolid zipdarts were quite effective against even magical armour. Each weapon also took precious time to regenerate-reload new zipdarts for the weapons were self loading with the use of special magical charges. Twenty shaperfolk appearing as warriors, eight gremora warriors, five elementrols, nine shaperbeasts disguised as hounds, three bobblins and Lucky Eddie soon set out for SancreTor, the ancient brooding fortress. After a while they found an ancient stretch of road that glowed softly in the darkness. Such artifacts of the Mythic Age were rare, especially such as this stretch of highway. They followed the road with care, thankful that it was mostly covered by overhanging treetops. The forests had become very thick and it would be easy to lose even a small city of the Ancients in such a place. Lucky Eddie was not concerned about such ancient power but both the bobblins and gaedra seemed relieved when the group left the softly glowing highway to head towards SancreTor. The great monster came striding out of the trees, hissing and puffing jets of steam and light brown smoke. It was metallic, it was a robot, it was a steammagic powered mechawalker. It had two great chunky legs, single jointed, and two thinner upper arms and two thicker lower arms. Both sets of arms were foldable and double jointed. The thicker ones held big striking maces studded with large spikes. The thinner arms held strange tubular devices, one spitting lots of metallic darts and the other jetting spurts of flame. Lucky Eddie cursed for he had failed to sense it until almost the last moment, meaning it had been screened from him. Only the evil fiend, Irmaster, could do such a thing but not for long or so he assumed. The bobblins shot up into the trees with amazing speed and agility to be ready to shoot magical exploder-arrows at the great magic-steam monster. The gaedra went started to scatter but then a white and yellow flag of peaceful intent popped up out of the head of the monster. Out of the back, through a thick metal hatch, clambered two Blades in their fighting armour. They strode forward proudly to meet with Eddie and the others. The woman stepped forward being a BladeKnight and she spoke. “Be at peace. We have formed an agreement with the gaedra and the peoples of the Sanctuaries. We have no time to speak too long now. SancreTor is being attacked by a large force of daedra including kinds new to Tamriel. While we have five of these new magic-steam golemites to assist the defense of SancreTor, we are still heavily outnumbered.” She held a powerful magic boosted crossbow in her hands. It was a boxbow that had a wooden box magazine above the breech of the crossbow. Such weapons could fire quicker than normal crossbows but were normally weaker in hitting power and slower to reload unless a topping up technique was used. Maharg67
0013LUCKY EDDIE Other Blades came out of the forest and with them was a tall, powerful and learned High Wizard of the name of Dalfgan. Though her signature robes were dazzling white she wore more sensible brown robes to better blend into the forest. She was damned beautiful and youthful appearing and she liked to flaunt it just a little. Dalfgan was immortal humans, one of the High Wizards of the Underworld beneath Tamriel that, again, most peoples of Tamriel had no idea existed. Not that they would rush to go there if they did for the Underworld, known as Matriel, was largely a harsh place to live in. It was not improved by the fact that many Ayleids had fled there from the great uprising of slaves that had overthrown their Cyrodilin Kingdoms. There were others also who had fled to Matriel and others had appeared there mysteriously such as the Dwemers, the false dwarves of Tamriel who had vanished from there almost once. Dalfgan was hard on the outside and could be very tough but she was wise and brilliant. She was also a little wary of Lucky Eddie as Lucky Eddie was a little wary of her. She spoke to Eddie. “I see, young and ancient, glorious but cursed, eternal but mortal. Lucky Eddie, you have been Lucky Eddie before just as you have been others before more than once.” He nodded. “Dalfgan, we meet again. We never did finish that last game of nine by nine dimensional chess.” The High Wizard smiled. “Good, you remember. I have a set with me because I sensed we would meet. More importantly I need your assistance, this world needs your assistance, to block some gateways that should never have been opened and to strengthen some barriers that should have stopped those gateways from opening.” Lucky Eddie looked towards the big magic-steam device. “Based on Dwemer knowledge, I take it.” The High Wizard frowned. “Very much so. You will meet the trio who reinvented this and other steammagic devices. Brilliant, mortal, and almost identical triplets being one male and two females. I screened the movement of the mechawalker but not against yourself. Daedra monsters patrol these forests along with some of the strange creatures that we have no knowledge of.” Lucky Eddie studied the steammagic mechawalker. “You do not approve of such devices?” “Only because it is so easily tempting for any civilization to construct and use such devices, exploiting to many resources and causing too much damage to the environment. At least I had the smoke filtration magic and filters upgraded.” The High Wizard sighed. “And the burning efficiency upgraded so less coal creates more energy. The Blades see the use of steammagic only in the form of warmachines but the triplets see steammagic cranes, stage-coaches, boats, ships, flying-ships and much else besides. They even speak of something called steammagic rail-coaches and steammagic catapults.” Lucky Eddie sensed that there was something important that the High Wizard was not telling him about the triplets; that is something that might not please him. He spoke. “I sense increasing danger. Something bad is coming this way in large numbers and I have an uncomfortable feeling that I know what they are. We need to get to SancreTor as quickly as we can.” But it was already too late! Edited August 2, 2011 by Maharg67
Maharg67
0014LUCKY EDDIE The weird sound, a shriek of utterly inhuman kind, caught their attention. Then a very strange attack came out of the forest in the form of flying, burning skulls. There was a large swarm of them and with burning, inhuman eyes and jaws open to show flaming fangs, they rushed towards different targets. Lucky Eddie scowled. “The doomfolk of Matriel have come to Tamriel and that is far from good. Of all of the Matriellans, the doomfolk or Doomhorda, are amongst the worst.” He drew out his multiple-revolver and fired of a multiple-bullet, with a heavy thudding sound, that became nine glowing bullets. Each struck a skull, veering to do so, and each of the skullhorda exploded dramatically, screaming as it did so more in rage than in pain. Lucky Eddie fired off three more multiple-bullets, twenty-seven homing-bullets in all, and destroyed twenty-seven more of the creatures. The High Wizard had aimed her metallic wooden mage-staff and had unleashed a shower of glowing magic-missiles that had also homed in on their targets. She had destroyed sixteen of the deadly creatures that were almost mindless quasiliving suicide missiles. The skulls were not taken from humans but had very small horns and were otherwise shaped a little differently. The two of them had destroyed all of the attackers but another swarm of the skullhorda was far too soon coming out, burning, out of the thickness of the forest. Warriors turned and fired off magic arrows from bows and magical bolts from crossbows. The gaedra and Blades were both elite fighters and their projectiles hit with much efficiency. Battlemages also struck out at the attackers, hurling fireballs, lightening bolts and other forms of magical projectiles. A fiery flying skull struck a BladeGuard and exploded dramatically, destroying itself but killing the Cyrodilin Commoner at once. The human flew through the air and lay sprawled on his back looking horrifically damaged. The mechawalker body swiveled and it unleashed a burst of metal tubedarts at the enemy swarm. Many of the darts missed but many struck and as they did the flaming skulls exploded, often causing yet other flaming skulls to do so. Bobblins fired arrows with amazing speed and accuracy, using their tails to help load their bows so as to keep their hands on the weapons. Their glowcrystal tipped arrows caused burning skullhorda to explode dramatically. With a blast a gaedra Warguard perished but all the attackers were destroyed being very many of them. They had been attacked by burning-skulls, sometimes known as ‘lost souls’, of the Doomhorda that served the Doomlords and worshiped the Doomgod. It was said that the Doomgod had another identity, its true identity, and that it had set up the Doomhorda to carry out its wishes in such a way as to keep its true identity secret. Some said that doomfolk were really a kind of daedra but daedric peoples did not seem to agree to this. Other folks such as the gaedra and kaedra certainly did not know the truth but had doubts. The doomfolk existed, it was theorized, on one of the moons of Nirn but nobody was even sure which one it was; that is either Masser or Secunda. Some ancient fragments of stories also mentioned that doomfolk had long ago come down to Nirn but not Tamriel. They had colonized part of the dreaded super continent of Matriel that the great majority of Tamriellans did not even know existed.
