Oblivion Refuses To Play!

I used Salmo before and I never had a problem with it, still, I got rid of it like you suggested but it still didn't work. Like I said, I tried running the game with no mods active and it didn't work. I do use BOSS but that doesn't help either. I used UOP before but it only seemed to give me more problems than do any good so I don't usually like using it. Do you have any more suggestions? D:

If it wont even run vanilla, it sounds like a bad install. Check out one of the great guides on uninstalling/reinstalling just to make sure you didnt skip a step, but do the reinstall anyway. If that didnt work, id try buying a new copy. Even a tiny scratch in the wrong place can cause major problems.

Also make sure you are running the most current version of Oblivion, as some mods will be dependant on this.

One more thought; before running the game, go into options from the main menu and turn down the graphics settings a notch. Oblivion doesnt recognize newer drivers, and may not have configured itself correctly.

I got rid of every trace of Oblivion when I reinstalled it, twice, so I doubt that's the problem. Although, I didn't delete the registry. I'll buy a new copy just in case. I am running the current version, yes. I tried running the game without the new drivers, and then updating them and reinstalling, then running it again... didn't work. This really sucks...

DO NOT delete the registry. That controls all of the programs installed on your computer including Windows. Deleting it will make your computer unable to boot at all!

However, your problem is probably in the registry. Those entries are not removed when you uninstall and can come back to byte you later.

A new copy of Oblivion will not change the registry entries that are causing this and you will be out the cost of a copy of the game.

If you still feel the need to get a new copy, Be sure to either get a DVD version or Steam. - D2D, Impact and other downloadable versions will not work properly with some mods or with OBSE which is needed for many mods to function.

The fix to the registry problem is in this.

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=240

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.

Nero, and FFDShow codecs as well. If you don't use Nero, simply uninstall it. FFDshow should have a configuration utility in the start menu, tell it to ignore oblivion, both audio, and video.

also, try installing the klite basic codec pack, be sure ffdshow is set properly (should be by default) and that it is set to repair broken codecs. If you already have it, uninstall it, and re-install it.

HeyYou: What are you talking about?

bben46: I already do everything your instructions say, except the registry thing, that's how I've always uninstalled and reinstalled games... I learned the hard way in the past. So now I painstakingly uninstall everything important, then the little things, then delete the folders... it's always worked for me before, but now I'm having a problem. I assume it's the registry. I'll go through your instructions step by step and see if it makes any difference. I had downloaded "Registry Reviver" but it wasn't free and it kept starting up with windows with no way to stop it, so I'm trying to uninstall it... so far it's not uninstalling... anyway, I just downloaded CCleaner, I hope that's different.

Nero is CD burning software. It installs codecs that the game doesn't like.

FFDShow is a codec as well, I have no idea what software installs it. Installing the klite pack will solve the ffdshow issue. but, not the nero problem.

I don't have any of that.

I checked out registry reviver and it seems to be a bogus program, Rated as scareware, not a virus, but definitely malware as it has no uninstall, installs on boot and pops up constantly with bogus warnings to try to get you to pay. :verymad:

There is no reason for a registry cleaner to load on boot as they are actually rarely needed. Most of what I use ccleaner for is not the registry cleaner, but the other features.

And, ccleaner is FREE - just be sure to read all of the install page to avoid installing the yahoo search engine with it.

Here is a link to a good uninstaller (revo) that should allow removing registry reviver. http://majorgeeks.com/Revo_Uninstaller_d5706.html

If you installed with GOTY Edition 2 disc set, you my need to use SecureROM removal tool. There is application data stored if you didn't install install completely custom.

When you do you install, how many do you install before you test the game? Install the discs, then DLC and then UOP+Supplementals, then all the plugin managers, Bashers, OBSE, and such. This is when I would test a new game. With each new mod installed test with that new save (all nice and vanilla) and continue. Some say BOSS is the best, try it out if you haven't. I prefer reading thoroughly the readme attached to each mod or check it myself in TES4Edit.

Load order or list of preferred mods to install would be most helpful in solving your trouble.

Good luck.
