Bitdman
Hello folks! This might apply to Morrowind, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 and I think will be important if Skyrim ends up being an "unstable" game also. Can we make a list of the Top 'whatever 2 or 5 or 10' reasons for the games crashing? then post solutions to the causes.Right now there is information (mostly speculation) out there that is very confusing and seems to create as many or more problems than are solved.I think the game creators should deal with tis issue, but because many of the causes are "mod" related they won't get involved.I hope modders will get involved as well as game utilities creators so as to chip away at this nagging issue. Thandal
What do you all think?I think that since the underlying issues (to the extent they can be identified) are likely to be game-specific, any such discussions belongs under the "Technical Support" forums for each game. bben46
As all of the other games - But not Skyrim are based on the old gambryo engine, there are some common problems. Skyrim is suposedly based on a new game engine and will have it's own separate problems.Gambryo problems1. Installing to the default location in Vista & Win7 causes several problems - such as mods not showing up in game, utility programs not installing properly and problems when trying to use the construction set or GECKSolution - Don't install to the default location2. Memory leak - crash after running for a while caused by not properly releasing Ram when no longer being used.Solution - take a break, exit the game and restart every hour or two.3. Uninstall does not really uninstall the game, leaves behind several registry entries that can cause a crash on starting the game after reinstalling.See my Complete uninstall/reinstall procedure4. Corrupted saves - usually when saved on fast travel.Solution - Turn off save on fast travel Most other problems are not caused by the game, but caused by mods - improper installs, load order and incompatible Mods. Arthmoor
I think #1 and #3 are common things across hoardes of programs and certainly not a fault of Gamebryo. Much of what was developed before UAC came along is blissfully ignorant of the consequences of being installed in Program Files.

OK!After spending the day reading about crashing "possible" causes I agree with Thandal. I think the problems are too diverse and must be dealt with on an individual basses. Thank you Thandal, bben46,and Arthmoor for your input.Like Maddog, We'll just have to 'keep fighting the good fight'Long Live the modding community!
