Game freeze on ui

Recommended Posts

I just started playing oblivion again after a few years and have run into a problem. Ive been trying different things and reading different guides for a couple of weeks now and can't seem to fix this issue. Everything in the game works amazing except when I hit tab to open my inventory or look at my map. The whole game locks up and makes a high pitched sound. It doesn't crash to the desktop, it just locks up and i have to manually shut down my computer. It does this anywhere from 10 min to an hour of playtime on average. I thought it might be hardware related but like i said, everything else in the game runs very smooth, its just when i open the inventory. It seems to happen the most when I open books or look at my map. Once in awhile it happens when I open the save menu but not often. I am running a lot of mods but none that change the UI. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. If I need to post specs or anything just let me know.

Ok, here it goes. I uninstalled everything. Got rid of all my mods, all DLC, obmm, obse, boss, and cleaned my registry. I then re installed oblivion, shivering isles, and all official DLC. With nothing added (no mods and un-patched) it played fine. I then updated with the official patch and re installed obmm, boss, and obse. I loaded oblivion through the obse shortcut and not 5 min in it froze up on the inventory! So i then loaded oblivion through the regular launcher shortcut and it played fine again. Lol that narrows the search down tremendously. It has to be something with the script extender. Im using the most up to date stable version 20. Does that help at all? Thanks for getting back to me so quick I really do appreciate it.

That's REALLY odd..... I am running the stable v.20 version of obse as well, and have not had any problems with it......

If you have GOTY edition, you don't need any official patches beyond installing the base game, and SI.

If you have win7, or Vista, might wanna uninstall the game again, and reinstall to someplace outside of the program files directory. C:\Games\Oblivion works good.

If none of that makes a difference, I would post in the Official OBSE thread on the Bethesda forums.

Well, I spoke too soon. After some more play testing it crashed again, through the normal launcher this time so its not the obse after all. I think it must be hardware related but its just really odd that the only time it crashes is on the ui. Ive tried it on all different graphics settings and that doesn't seem to have any effect. Sigh... i'll keep playing around with it, thanks for helping me. :wallbash:

It's fairly rare for a game to cause a complete system halt. It's probably either:

1. Overheating. Download and install the free (and trustworthy) program "Hardware Monitor" and make sure none of the temps are above 50C when outside the game (leave the computer running for a while before checking).

2. Driver issues. Make sure you have the latest (and correct) drivers for your video card, sound card, etc.

3. RAM issues. Download and install Memtest86+ to a USB memory stick (Select the "Download - Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7)" download). After you've installed it to the memory stick, reboot the computer with the memory stick still inserted. A blue screen should appear and begin checking the RAM. Leave it running for a few hours. If it reports even one error, then a RAM stick is likely damaged (re-run the check a few times if you want to make sure). Run the test again, with only one stick in, until you find which stick is causing the errors.

Hi, ive had a very similar problem to this, randomly during game play my cursor and keyboard commands will freeze, but everything else will keep happening, animations moving sound ect. Im replying here because it usually only happens when i open my inventory/map. It only really started freezing like this after i installed the mod "Ahtata Dremora replacer HGEC", i have sense taken the mod out but it still happens. To save time, as ive seen you ask for load orders and such, ill just post mine, i hope it helps.

Have you tried regenerating the Oblivion.ini?

Find it in the same place as your save games - On mine (Win7) C:\Users\Your user name\My documents\My games\Oblivion

rename the Oblivion to something else such as oldOblivion.ini

Then start the game and it will create a new Oblivion.ini based on your hardware.

I just regenerated the Oblivion.ini, and played for a while. The performance did go up, but unfortunately when i went into a new area it froze again :( this time there was a black bar on the side of my screen tho ( about |-----| in thickness, i have not seen that happen before). Is there anything else i can do aside from reinstalling it completely?

When running in fullscreen mode, try setting your Oblivion screen size to that of your desktop size. (1280x1024, 1360x768, etc). I see a load order that needs rearranging. Best to give a link: http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=programs_and_utilities These will help both OP and kuro. Check out the site Home page, it'll set you on the path to a more beautiful and stable Oblivion gaming experience. ;)
