Classic Games

Ohhh...Lemmings...I forgot about that one. I have been searching for a copy of that game. I mistakenly got a copy of something called "Lemmings: Revolutions" but its nowhere near the same.

Also, did anyone ever play a game called 'Red Baron'? It was an old school flying game where you took off from your base and went to bomb and strafe the enemy bunkers? My parents had it on an ultra old school IBM when I was a kid. Simcity was still my first real game though.

I'll be a "post lemming" and follow the crowds on posting to multiple game threads. Now how classic do you want to go? I could say Zork, or a bit more modern like jetfighter and gato, but I guess I will go with slightly more modern than those and say Masters of Orion......

To get onto the question of what is a classic game, i think it comes down to a couple of points:

1. Replayability:Does it have staying power? I know that i keep going back to Grim Fandango of my old PC just because of the brilliance of it.

2. Fun factor: Do you have fun playing it? If you're trudging through Myst (yawn) but are enjoying yourself  then its a classic for you.

3. Inovation: Is it innovative or original? Like Dune 2000 was the precursor to the C&C series (Damn you Westwood. Damn you all to hell!!!), and Wolfenstien was the mother of the FPS industry. These were the originals, but games that add something to a genre can also be inovative, like the destructive terrain in Red Faction (this does not make it a classic game, oh no.) or the Bullet Time in Max Payne (also, too short to be a classic. I tell ya, developers can't be bothered to make a decent-length game anymore. Example - Unreal II compared to the original :angry2: ).

There, my little essay on the subject. And to add my games to the list: Half-Life,

Call of Duty, Grim Fandango (that you Lucasarts) and the Age of... series.

Hmm... I'm not as old as a lot of the people here so can't list many "real" classics (from 10 years ago or more :P) but...

Chrono Trigger - Now here's more of an oldie. Brilliant storyline, great soundtrack and atmosphere. Very nice 2D artwork. Good gameplay. Very decent RPG. One of the best I've ever played. Quality. :D

Morrowind - Do I really need to explain? :D

Diablo 2 - Sheer replayability and addictability. Was about as deep as a puddle but damn fun nonetheless. Had me playing for a good month or more. Definately worth the money! :P

Ultima Online - Yes well, EA Games may have stuffed it up, but I had some good times on that game. :D Almost 2 years in membership before I quit.

Hmm. Classics

Diablo I and II, for innovation and replayability.

MW, need I say more

Fallout again for innovaqtion. While Fallout 2 and tactics are good, they are just short of classic status (not innovative and Fallout 2 very buggy)

Civ (and the Civ series) for addictive life stealing qualites, replayability and a great game. Master of Orion really falls in to that catoregry really

Might of Magic series, cool replayable

Lemmings. Addictive beyond belif and very cool in all forms

Shogun total war (and medivail total war) very innovative and so addicivte

Finally for FPS think it has to be Wolfenstein for starting it all of and Doom and Quake for pushing the boundries of FPS
