Carter (burping )

Wha???

The sound of gunfire follows, with the distinctive whir of a viterbird through the air...

Carter

no... no... it cant be

Carter runs through the forest in his stupor, his mind flashes to memories of his burnt down village and the bodies of everyone he ever loved strewn about, tears streeming down his face

Rushing to a clearing, his eyes set on the rough battle before him - he immediatley recognises the tribe...them crazys his people fought against so many times in the past, knowing what they do with the bodys wonce the battle is over, almost causeing him to vomit

Big Guy

Repent Blasphemer!

Seeing some Big Guy tribal pummelling some Old man, Carter pulls out his personal Bull .480 - the Hole Punch - with his right hand.

Carter( drunk )

F***ing a**hole fanatic, get the f*** away from that poor old bastard!

Big Guy looks up, spotting Carter standing just a few feet away with the Hole Punch -

Carter fires the Hole Punch with recklessness.

Carter(shooting with drunken laughter)

Come and get me ya fat c***!

Carter shoots the Big Guy trying to get him away from the stranger (Hoage)...his left hand settling on his single 12ga sawn off

After William took out the tribal, Fenix nodded, as a "thank you" to him.

He looked around and spotted some trouble: an RPG guy was aiming for the bird, while Hoage was on the ground, with a towering man above him, waiting to sink his blade into him.

Fenix <thinks>

If the RPG guy hits the bird, most likely everyone will die up there, but I don't want the guy who saved me two times die, either.

Fenix frowns, he doesn't seem to know what to do.

He aims his rifle at the big guy, when suddenly, out of nowhere, comes a crazy, drunk man, who is barely standing on his legs, and shoots down the big wildman towering above Hoage

Fenix

Hmph. Miracles DO exist...

He aims his rifle towards the RPG guy, and sends some bullets his way.

*Gormonk; fix your post up with a better introduction when you can. I gave you an idea of how to do it in the PM, if you want you could just copypaste that, otherwise try write something similar. Also want to inform everyone that unless the NPC's name is bold, they're unimportant and can be killed by anyone and can have their actions written by anyone, for that matter, without having to be in a boss fight. They'd be minor characters, as opposed to true NPC's who'd be Supporting characters and the Player Characters who are obviously the mains and have their names underlined. You never have to name them anything other than, say 'big guy', 'Merc with machine gun' etc, and you don't really need to give em dialouge. Get my drift?*

Hoage opens his eyes - the big tribal reeling in shock from a massive hole in his shoulder.

With haste Hoage quickly drives the Tomahawk into the Big Guy's skull, cracking it aloud - the axehead wedged in tight.

Throwing the corpse off his body he gets up and looks around for his mysterious guardian -

A Drunk random named Carter.

Hoage has no time for thanks - a Tribal starts firing on him with a russian LMG -

Rocket Tribal pays no attention to his surroundings. Fully absorbed with aiming his One-Shot RPG, he smirks when the light bleeps.

Rocket Tribal

For the Spirit!

Suddenly he's hit in the side by a barrage of .22 plinkings - courtesy of Fenix.

Aim thrown off, the RPG fires -

The rocket misses the bird by a huge margin, barrel rolling through the air and smashing against a large tree that creaks aloud - ready to fall right on top of Carter

After he shooting the RPG tribal down, Fenix smiles with satisfaction:

Fenix

Phew, that was way too close...

His joy is short-lived, however; as he stands up to target the leader of the tribals, he feels a strong pain in his right leg, and falls to the ground.

Fenix <scared>

...What... the...

After landing he looks at his thigh, and notices that something bad has happened. Someone shot him.

The merc immidiately starts searching for a stimpak in his pockets, but he only found an empty syringe, which he used after his SMG blew up in his hand.

Tribal marksman <thinks>

Damn, I missed his head. The bastard jumped up too quickly. At least he's down. Shock and blood loss will do the job.

Fenix, lying on the ground in the the tall grass, hopelessly tries to find a way to stop the bleeding.

William sees that Fenix is down. He switches off the hover flies the vertibird only a couple of meters from the ground he than quickly opens the ramp throws Fenix a med-x and a stimpack and a flare tied together.

"Here ya go. You owe me one. You damn mercs get shot too quickly. "

He jumps to his pilot seat and gains some altitude.

Fenix cathes the 2 syringes, and injects himself with the stim.

Fenix

Thanks pal! But... I ain't owe you nothing. After all, I shot the one with the RPG...

He smiles.

Fenix <whispers>

...you ungrateful bastard.

As the stim start to work, the pain slowly starts going away. Fenix crawls back behind the tree, and reloads his gun.

Fenix <scared>

The a**hole who shot me... Where is he?

A chill runs down his spine as he leans out from behind the tree and looks around the woods.

Carter

f*********************************K, come on old man, we gott move

quickly holsters "hole punch" and tackles Hoage out of the way of the tree and into cover of a bilding

Carter

"the names Carter"

a loud thud along with a chrushing sound fills the air for a moment

some tribal's bloody body's all squashed underneath the huge tree

Carter (to Hoage)

"a freind of yours old man??"

Hoage feels someone shove him out of the way of the gunfire - the next thing he knows, they're in some logshed - the thick logs inside providing plenty of cover.

Carter

The name's Carter

Hoage reels back from the smell of Carter's breath

Hoage

I'd thank you but -

CRASH! the tree outside crushes some poor tribal.

Carter

Freind of yours old man?

Hoage (smirking)

You can call me Hoage, and not "Old Man".

Suddenly bullets start whizzing through the windows and unprotected walls of the log shed -

Hoage looks out one window, spotting Fenix using a stimpack.

He looks back to Carter

Hoage (pointing out the window towards Fenix)

See the rookie in black? Help him out - but don't scare the kid.

The old vet peeks out the other window - facing the LMG guy and the tribals firing from atop the hill. Hoage can make out Qochata, standing there with the thermic lance by his side.

Hoage (quickly ducking back inside)

I'm gonna give you some cover.

Cocking the Combat Rifle, Hoage covers himself by the window and starts shooting back at the tribals. He forces the LMG tribal into cover -

Hoage (to Carter)

GO! Now!

*If anyone else wants to, they can also write their own side-stories involving NPC's, either set in Greater Anchorage or perhaps somewhere else in the coldlands. This is a good thing to do especially when waiting on another player. Try to make these side-stories somewhat self-contained - ie. not relying on other users posts too much. Eventually there'll come a point where certain side-stories can intertwine with the main story - don't be afraid to contribute with say, an NPC who might be significant for your character. You can also make flashback posts, if you felt inclined. Take as much time as you want with these and do 'em in notepad if you want to save it. Anyway, check the latest post in the announcement thread regarding locations and the RP map where we can further discuss lore*

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Greater Anchorage

Recovery Wing - Bunker 2

Bunker 2 suffered light damage during the great war, including bombardment from Chinese Warships and vertibirds. It featured an array of anti-air weapons that would hold off anyone assault from the air, while a tremendous Naval Gun, dubbed the Olympian, would destroy any vessels coming down the Unakwik Inlet from atop the bunker...where it still functions today. When the Northern Enclave was overthrown, King Saturn had the Bunker converted into a trade & Supply Depot and Hospital for the people.

Sordo sits up on a bed in the recovery wing. Looking at his arm, partly out of wonder and mostly out of fear.

Two shadowy figures watch him from behind the one-way mirror.

Mai

He's showing an amazing recovery. Body doesn't seem to be rejecting the implants...

Commodore Lawson glances at Mai - his odd glass eye glinting in the light

Lawson

Looks like he doesn't want it...he'll change when he tries it out.

Mai

Yes. Quon thinks it's a step up from the ThreeGen Project...

Lawson scoffs at the notion -

Lawson

Please, like one little hiccup ruined the ThreeGen Project. The procedure has given us some of the BEST we've ever seen, and still does!

Mai

That 'hiccup' nearly changed a lot of things.

Lawson

Yes, but it mostly sorted itself out afterwards. This...this is just recycling old tools...with good tech.

Mai seems offended

Mai

Old tools? These same 'tools' saved our city from becoming salvage for the Steel Plauge!

Lawson

Yes, and then one non-existant member went and spoiled his reputation soon after that.

He looks back to Sordo through the glass.

Lawson

We should've erased those little mistakes as soon as they appeared...along with that Brown bastard.

Mai

I don't want to incite treason, but that 'brown bastard' is the reason you didn't get ripped in two by the Paladins -

Lawson

Governess, you're starting to sound like Taurus.

Lawson eyes here with a devious glare.

Lawson

So...

Mai (regretfully)

I think you're confusing the commander with someone else...

Lawson

Of course I am. How silly of me...

Lawson looks back out the glass -

Kard enters Sordo's room.

Kard

Sorrrdo...You look...betterrr.

Sordo grumbles, mumbling something incoherent.

Kard

Y-you're still a beautiful guy darrrrling!

Sordo

Cut it out! I'm an Abonimation!

Sordo smashes the bedside table with his steel arm and throws himself onto bed, turning away from Kard.

The nightkin's upset, coming closer. Sordo clenches his eyes shut.

Kard

The doctor said you'd become stronger - you could take on someone like Taurus!

Sordo opens his eyes

Kard

You can last longer - you can fight harrrrrder...

Sordo sits up, looking out the window overlooking the markets, slums and Unakwik Inlet -

A grimace slowly grows

Sordo

I want to try it...

Kard

Honey?

Sordo looks directly at the one-way mirror - getting off and walking right up to the glass.

Lawson takes a step back while Mai curiously looks on.

Sordo

I want to try it now.

Mai hits the intercom.

Mai

Call in Dr. Quon. Tell him Sordo wants to play with his new toy.

Com Operator

Acknowledged, ma'am, We received update on the hijacked bird!

Lawson comes up to a surprised Mai and the intercom.

Lawson

This is your Commodore, What's the situation?

Com Operator

Scouts reported the chopper bearing south east towards Willow Creek.

Lawson

That's near Ikkuma territory. Should've known the fanatical bastards were up to something big.

Mai

That doesn't make sense...that bird was lost south of Cantwell. Nothing but Grolar Beasts and some abandoned junkyard around those mountains.

Thinking for a moment...Mai hits a button near the intercom.

Mai (nurse imitation)

Sordo...darling. How would you like to try out your new self on some savages?

Sordo chuckles.

Sordo

At last.

Looking through the woods, Fenix finally spots a marksman on top of a tree.

Fenix

There you are, you coward son of a ...

The sniper, believing that Fenix is lying and bleeding out in the tall grass, turned his attention to Hoage and Carter.

The merc aims his rifle at him.

Fenix

If you plan on killing someone, you better finish it...

He shots 3 shots from his Light combat rifle, one of them hitting the marksman, who loses his stability, falls down from the tree, and makes a cracking noise upon landing.

Fenix

...you bastard.

Fenix's attention now turns to the Leader of the tribals.

Fenix

He's such a great target, sitting out there...

He frowns, and slowly brings Qochata's head into the rifle's sights.

Fenix

What is he up to?

As he'd pull the trigger, he gets interrupted by someone from behind.

The merc immidiately turns back, and aims his rifle at the interruptor.

It's Carter.

Fenix

<gasp> Dammit man, you scared the sh*t outta me!

He still doesn't lower his rifle, he doesn't know whether he can trust the stranger.

The thick russian combat armour spares Qochata's life as he throws himself back to avoid injury.

Qochata

Clever...

He crawls to the downed marksman, picking up the scoped varmint rifle -

Standing back up, he eyes the situation through the scope...

Hoage runs out of the logging shed, firing his way through tribals...heading for Qochata.

Qochata

Strange...for worshippers of the demon king they seem...different...

Qochata's scope looks towards Carter and Fenix

Qochata

And yet...they'd help eachother...they don't seem to have a commander...

Qochata catches hoage in his sight.

Qochata

Unless...

He fires towards Hoage -

the vet gets clipped just above the shoulder, but keeps going while gritting his teeth. The bullet barely missing a vital nerve, hurting like hell.

Qochata

No...they came on one of the demon's birds...

Hoage tries firing - his rifle's empty, and he's out of mags.

Hoage

Gonna have to get dirty!

Wiedling the winter combat rifle like a club he smacks away approaching tribals -

Qochata

They seem so honourable...

The clanlord stands to his feet, throwing the varmint away, and charging his thermic lance.

Hoage runs up the hill - jumping off a leaning boulder, he holds his rifle high and brings it down on Qochata -

Who strikes him once with the lance.

In a crack of light Hoage is throw back, smashing into the dirt. He scoffs in pain.

Qochata looks down on him.

Qochata

You have a gun. Shoot me, demon worshipper.

Still on his back, Hoage eyes Qochata with determination...but doesn't reach for his gun.

Qochata

Are you not working in the Service of the Demon King? Do you not wish to slay our holy shaman?

Hoage

We don't serve Saturn. Till just six hours back I never heard of the bastard.

Qochata looks deep into Hoages eyes. A realisation dawns.

Qochata

You...seem honest. Your heart seems to have been through many battles...you've lost friends...loved ones.

Hoage stands to his feet, keeping a grip on the Ruger.

Hoage

You speak like you understand...

Qochata smirks.

Hoage

Who's the shaman you mentioned? Izek?

Qochata remains silent

Hoage

I served alongside him long ago, in the lands far to the south. My name is Hoage.

Qochata's eyes widen in surprise.

Qochata

You are he who our Holy Shaman mentioned...

Hoage

Yes! We've got children in the chopper; a small boy and his sister Petra. The boy...Aaron, needs your shaman's medicine, uhhh...blessing or whatever he does for the kid!

Qochata

The children of the Rock Giant...we have made a grave mistake. Forgive us...

Qochata raises his thermic lance to the air - tuning it to full power.

He lets out a might loud thunder of a noise, catching everyone's attention.

Qochata (at the top of his lungs)

These men do not serve the demon king! Cease all hostility!

Qochata looks back to Hoage

Qochata

You all fight with something the demon's men and giants lack. This, is something the Ikkuma are proud of.

Hoage

And what you do to people after you kill them?

Qochata

Who are you to question our culture? What we do is the most honourable way to treat the dead, to ensure their souls are clean before merging with the great spirit.

The clanlord looks out to Carter and Fenix.

Qochata

Men, women, servants of Ikkuma...bring in these warriors.

Qochata looks to Hoage.

Qochata

Tell your friend in the bird to follow us. We'll take you to our Shaman.

Hoage's unsure, but signals towards William.

In the chopper, Petra unstraps herself and runs up to the cockpit.

Petra (to William)

This reminds me of when daddy first met the medicine man and his friends north a bit. It's a funny way of saying 'hello!'

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An hour later...

Deep in the forests.

Hoage, Carter and Fenix are kept close to Qochata as they walk through the thick foilage, coming to a huge clifface...overlooking a small village.

Qochata

The holy shaman resides in the village. No one outside the Ikkuma save for the blessed children and the rock giant have ever set foot, or even feasted their eyes, on this land.

Izek's village is home to one hundred people, some of whom serve in the Ikkuma Warrior Caste. It's procted by salvaged anti-aircraft guns placed within stocky but sturdy pyramid platforms build of wood and stone. Qochata, a regarded Clanslord, leads the warrior caste that serves within the village. It is not the only Ikkuma village in the coldlands - the tribal nation is quite widespread, with around 300 villages across their territory. Nor is it the greatest village - that would go to the Ikkuma Citadel, a location Saturn's forces have yet to discover.

Qochata

You shall be the next.

The clanslord look to Hoage

Qochata

Hoage the valiant, I will escort you and the blessed children to the Holy Shaman.

Qochata's eyes linger to the others.

Qochata

Your companions can explore the village, but they must not cause a disturbance. If one of our men challenges one to a duel, your warrior must accept the terms.

Hoage

So...you're totally fine with how we killed your men?

Qochata

You did so in battle. Our departed would be most grateful of such a dignified death.

Hoage

What about the guy who got crushed by a tree?

Silence.

Qochata

...That was his own fault.

Hoage shrugs.

Hoage

Fair enough.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Izek's Village

Sometime Later.

Hoage, with Petra, Aaron, Carter, Fenix and William walk through the market, escorted by Qochata and a few tribal guards.

The market sells fresh, farmed food, meat, medicines such as healing powder and antiveneom, totems and religious figures and jewlery (related to their belief of The Great Spirit). One building, with crude armour plating, seems stocked with weapons that are traded to hunters and warriors.

Qochata

Perhaps your men could find supplies here. We have a few heavy weapons, tools and armour plates fit for that Bird you fly...but you must find something useful to trade with.

Hoage nods to the others.

The group reaches an impressive temple - built of stone, it must've taken years to build. Qochata stops them at the foot of the temple.

Qochata

Twas the rock giant Brier who first came searching for our Holy Shaman. When my...predecessor saw the giant's soul through his eyes...he knew then that he had died an honourable death, and that Brier would be our greatest ally.

A small tear rolls down Qochata's cheek.

The clanslord quickly wipes it away and turns to face the group.

Qochata

Hoage, children...come with me.

Hoage looks back to the Fenix, William and Carter

Hoage

Check out the village, stock up on supplies, and help anyone with their problems if you can...but don't do anything stupid. Last thing we need is fifty angry tribals coming down on us.

Hoage, petra and Aaron follow Qochata through the temple.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's an amazing sight. Wood Carved Statues line the hall, electric fisson-powerd lights provide illumination, kept encased in stone within the walls.

Qochata

These were the Clanslords and Shamans who passed this world and merged with the Great Spirit.

Hoage observes the wood carvings...they're amazingly detailed.

As they walk further through the hall, the apparent intricacy of the temple grows. It's fully of twisty halls. Qochata takes a very particular path.

Hoage (whispering)

You kids been in here before?

Aaron nods. Petra smiles.

Petra

It seems creepy, but you get used to it.

Hoage

You don't say?

Petra

It's...actually kinda peaceful.

Hoage turns his gaze to Qochata, as they enter a burial hall. A few priests silently pray at the feet of the wooden carvings. They don't react.

Qochata does some kind of gesture with his hands as they leave the burial hall.

Qochata (sombrely to self, like a prayer)

...Tonrar blagoslovennyĭ anernerk detyeĭ...

Hoage

Can you get lost in here?

Petra giggles

Petra

Yeah, its full of dead ends, sleeping rooms for the priests and old burial chambers.

They finally enter a large antechamber. Qochata stops.

Qochata

I will allow you to attend to this matter in private. Be warned that I am watching.

Hoage

Trust me.

Qochata points to the centre of the massive room out the door.

Hoage nods, walking through with Petra and Aaron.

In the centre of the room, an israeli man seems to be praying.

Hoage

First the mormon thing, now this?

The man seems surprised as he gets up and looks at the vet and the children

Izek

Hoage...

Hoage

I hear you've been spreading rumors about me.

Izek

I...didn't think my message could ever reach you

Hoage

I got it months ago. Didn't even know if you were still alive.

Izek chuckles

Izek

I sent it three years ago. So soon after the war ended, in fact.

He notices the children.

Izek

Petra...Aaron...why have you accompanied this man?

Petra

He saved us...

Izek

But your father...no...

Aaron starts to sob.

Izek comes down from his central podium thing. He seems concerned but a little...high.

Izek

Amazing. The great spirit arranged the fate of the Coldlands...

He puts an arm around Aaron, then looks up to Hoage

Izek

And rested it on you coming here...at just the right time.

Hoage

Hey, it wasn't just me. I've run into two other men at that mountain. And a..third.

Izek

Yes...all perfectly fit to handle any obstacle.

Hoage laughs with scepticism.

Hoage

Izek, you can't be serious. You run off with those missionaries falling for their crap and now you're implying we were 'sent here' by a higher power.

Izek

You always doubted my purpose Hoage. I've changed many lives since the Great Spirit guided me here.

Hoage

I've heard this all before Izek. We've got more pressing matters right now

Izek looks to Qochata.

Izek

Go, great Clanslord. I'm fine from here.

Qochata bows, walking away in solitude.

Hoage

Anyway, what did you want these kids?

Izek smiles, guiding them around the central area - surrounded by a moat...

Hoage's eyes widen...the moat's a glass vat, planted in here from somewhere else...a base? The large stone podium sits in the centre of the vat connected by stairs.

Izek pulls out three long syringes, identical to Petra's.

Izek

The boy has yet to reach maturity. When he does, his body will attain its perfection.

Izek looks to Petra

Izek

Much like she did. No longer any need for the serum.

Hoage darts between the kids and Izek

Hoage

Wait, what do you mean? Everyone's been acting like these kids are special...how?

Izek

They are.

Petra

I never noticed...till Aaron was born...but he turned out normal in the end. Mom was a normal lady, and so was here mom. Still...everyone called us special...

Aaron

Some of daddy's friends did't like me though...

Izek looks to Hoage with a knowing look

Izek

Hoage, did you ever meet their father?

Hoage

Well...I met Brier...but...

Hoage looks at the kids. No way?

Izek

Yes...

Hoage

You...can't be serious? No...

Hoage grips his head. He takes a seat on a stone.

Hoage

He...FEV destroyed those parts...and any way to...s***...

Izek

None of that posed a problem.

Hoage

What the f*** are they?

Petra's taken aback, outright shocked at what Hoage said.

Izek

They are the first humans to be born from a mutant's DNA. The ultimate hybrid.

Izek grimaces.

Izek

Perfection, attained at last.

The horror dwells on Hoage as he stares at Petra and Aaron, the boy oblivious but the girl now dissapointed.

Hoage

Petra...you never said anything!

Petra (growing angry)

I...never really thought it'd be a big deal! I didn't think you'd be DISGUSTED!

She storms out of the room. Aaron tries to run after her -

Aaron

Petra! Don't go!

Izek grabs him.

Izek

Leave her be, Aaron.

Hoage looks to Izek with furious eyes.

Hoage

You call yourself spiritual, and yet you had a part in this, didn't you?

Izek

It was against my will...at first.

Izek sits near Hoage - who shuffles away in disgust.

Izek

Hoage...these children...they meant a lot to the mutants. We can finally give them a chance to be parents...and a chance to have stronger people come out in the long run. Greater reflexes, higher senses of hearing and smell. None of the drawbacks of being a Super Mutant.

Hoage

What about Aaron?

He looks to the boy.

Aaron (softly)

I never met my mommy...she died when I was born. I didn't come out right.

Izek

The boy wasn't...born fully human. The pain of childbirth killed the mother.

Izek runs his hand through Aaron's hair.

Izek

But Quon and I...my assisstant, we worked together night and day. Plastic surgery, full body braces. And now, these shots...

Hoage

What happens if he doesn't get them in time?

Izek

His body rejects the humanity, tries to shift into some kind of mutant-like form.

Izek wipes away Aaron's tears.

Izek

If you don't give it to him in time, he'll be braindead within twenty minutes.

Izek smiles at Aaron as he hands him the Syringes

Izek

Aaron...give these to your sister when she finds you.

Aaron takes the meds and looks to Hoage

Aaron

You don't think we're freaks do you?

Hoage looks into the Aaron's droopy eyes. He puts a hand on the kid's shoulder.

Hoage

Of course not...

Aaron

It didn't sound very nice...what you said.

Hoage

I won't say anything like that again. And I won't let anyone else call you that either.

Aaron smiles through dry tears.

Izek gets off the stone and walks to a large tablet engraved into the wall.

Izek

If you wish, Hoage, we can now spend time talking about the past. Maybe I could enlighten you on the faith?

Hoage

I've got a lot of questions to ask you, Izek...

*Whew, big reveal there. I had to hurry the story along, sorry if you guys were planning anything there. Anyway, I'm gonna go on vactation and while I will likley bring my laptop along, I might not be posting as often. You guys now have a chance to write plenty of Background Story involving NPC's and Side-quests involving the village. I hope to see lots of well written work.

NEW PLAYERS - You guys can still join, and perhaps interact in the side-quests...*
