The _m texture is an environment mask.

I haven't worked with them yet but I assume they mask parts of the environment map (_e) so that only certain parts of the mesh are shiny.

 

The sniper rifle has this kind of setup so you can look at it as an example.

what speedy said. it only works as a greyscale mask, unlike glow map(masks) which can contain color data. It can also be used to dampen the environment maps relfection effect not just mask out areas. I wrote some old outdated tutorials for F3 about env maps, and it mentions these textures, might be worth look< you can find them in the article data base of the nexus. not the wiki.
