eLucifer
I got the Steam version of Fallout New Vegas. Can I run it without having to log on to Steam or having it work at all?
kevkiev
You can try offline mode, that's the only way I know of: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3160-AGCB-2555
micalov
All versions of New vegas use steam, including the disk store brought version.
KennethKarl
Offline mode is the only legal way. Anything else is against the EULA regulations. Unfortunately steam is required on all legal copies of the game. I just use offline mode.
cavveman
If you don't have so good system, this could be a small solution, to save little resources: In Taskmanager, rightclick on the Steam process, and change the setting for the priority on how much resources it shall use.And you can be connected to steam, but not necesserarly online on your friendslist, just disable the community in-game, and set yourself as offline to friends, that saves some memory and cpu. Also, I recommend this application: Memory cleaner ---> http://www.koshyjohn.com/software/memclean/You can in the settings allow the program to trim the memory usage from all the processes, and clear out the system cache. In idle mode on my pc, I have managed to only use 500 MB ram on W7. When I have FONV running, I only use 35% of my ram (I have 4 GB). and that includes Firefox, xfire, steam running in the background.
raventrigun
Offline Mode, If anyone tells you that you can run without steam they are lying or suggesting piracy methods.
Gishank
Wether you love or loathe Steam, developers/publishers choose Steamworks for a reason... Mainly as it is a less intrusive DRM.

I had to go to Steam and talk with them about it as couldn't even run in offline mode. ( which by the way is no easy task ) They had me completely uninstall steam except for 2 files and it just reloaded it, when i restarted the game. It now plays in offline mode but Steam is still running in the background collecting stats and stuff and no telling what else. It still has process's running. If you shut down that process you also shut down your game. It is the Worst of DRM. It even politely ask me to turn the game off, when i didn't it shut it down for me. I have to do a force shut down of my Gaming rig, as it's still running even after i quit the game and go to something else, even for hours of playing another game or surfing the Net.. What else are these DRM people picking up off my system. They have to hold your hand to play a Game thats Single Player, and I have a Legal Disk and Code for the game by the way, bought with my hard earned dollars at the nearest Wally World. What more should I need to play a Totally Single Player game ? And the Dev's choose Steam as it gets them Stats, of what you are doing and playing. It's not just DRM. It's a lot lot more. There is no real Offline Mode in Steam. It just disconnects you from the Friends Area and the Store many other things are still happening in the background. Or you wouldn't have those process's still working for Steam. Offline means just that, your not connected, only you really are still connected to them. Oh and at 56 years of age the only hand I want to have holding mine is the Mrs. not Steam Edited February 23, 2012 by YellowEagle

Oh and at 56 years of age the only hand I want to have holding mine is the Mrs. not SteamI'm with you 100% YellowEagle. I really don't like Steam - for all the reasons you give, and more... I bought a 60GB SSD some time ago for my favourite games and moved Oblivion and Fallout 3 to it together with all their hi-res mods and DLC. I already had a Steam account from the days of HL2, and when I bought New Vegas (on DVD) it was automatically installed to my HDD C drive. Unlike any other software I've ever bought, I wasn't given the option of where to install New Vegas because Steam stuff apparently has to all be in the same location. So then I had to move my Steam folder to the SSD, which meant I had to remove Oblivion to make enough space for New Vegas (allowing for future mods and DLC). I bought Skyrim recently and had to remove Fallout 3 from the SSD for the same reason. I really don't think Steam has thought this through; I can't be the only one who uses a small SSD for games. Here's another reason I dislike Steam: I bought all the expansion packs for Oblivion and Fallout 3 on DVD at very good prices because I was able to shop around. But for New Vegas I've had to pay more for the DLC than I did for the original game because I had no choice other than to buy it from Steam. The same will no doubt happen with Skyrim DLC. I know the choice is mine and that I don't have to buy games that need Steam. I'm simply letting Bethesda know that I love their games but hate their involvement with Steam.
