Oblivion not functioning at all

Recommended Posts

tl;dr - No matter what I do Oblivion is breaking. What do?

I tried playing The Witcher 2 the other day, but really all it made me want to do is play Oblivion. I figured I'd change things up this time though, so I started looking at the game overhaul mods. At first I tried FCOM. Got everything set up, DLC installed, Wrye Bash, OMM and BOSS installed, followed the directions on the FCOM site...and the game wouldn't start. Just a black screen and then an error. I tried to fix it, no such luck. So I figured I would try the game with just Francesco's. Reinstall Oblivion, SI, Francesco's, and the unofficial patches (Oblivion, SI, and official mods)...and got another black screen.

So...third times the charm, right? Nope. Tried Oblivion, SI, and unofficial patches, got the same black screen. At this point I had no idea what I could be screwing up. I uninstalled everything, put in my retail copy of the game (up until now I had been using versions of the game that were acquired in a slightly less than legitimate manner). Tried it with just the vanilla install, black screen. Put on the 1.20 patch...black screen. Finally tried the patch and the unofficial oblivion patch...take a guess what happened.

PC specs (should be far beyond what this game needs):

OS: Windows 7 64 bit

Processor: AMD Phenom II 955

RAM: 6GB

Video card: Radeon HD 6870

In case it would matter, I'm running a dual monitor setup.

At this point I have no idea what else there is to do. Any suggestions?

Did it ever work on your current system? Any hardware changes will require a new Oblivion.ini to be created.

Have you tried deleting the Oblivion.ini (the one in the folder with your save games)?

I am using a dual monitor and have not had any problems, However several people have reported it causes black screen crashes. Try disabling one monitor.

Also, Have you tried with NO mods at all? Get it working with no mods, make a save (or better yet, use Mtes4 to make a clone of your working game and keep it as a backup)

Next time you feel the urge to reinstall, use this procedure.

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=240

When I rewrite the procedure for the wiki, I intend to include a recommendation to use mtes4 manager : http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35263

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.
