what do you think about the minigames?

Recommended Posts

[some minor spoilers]:

I love TW2, I don't mind the minigames, but they're not what they could/should have been. As an example of what I consider to be excellent minigames: do you remember the banjo contest in Monkey Island 3? That is quite excellent. Also, the duels that you have to win by insulting the opponent in rhyme are hilarous. Compared to that, minigames in TW2 just are not very well designed.

Dice Poker: although it's a relief that you don't have to win two out of three rounds anymore, it looks worse and plays worse than in TW1, and they simply reused the music as well. Also encourages you to reload when you lose. I never play unless I have to to advance the poker quest.

Fist fighting: beautiful cinematics, but it is crazy easy. I don't think I've lost a single fist fight ever. I only ever get hit when the phone rings at the wrong time. Would've been much more fun if you actually had to respond appropriately to what the opponent does. Fist fighting also does not play better than it did in TW1, although it does look better.

Arm wrestling: also looks nice but is not that much fun. Boring when you win, frustrating on the rare occasion you lose.

Timed events (other than in boxing): these have a very scripted feel to them, but I can understand there's a price to be paid for stunning cinematics. I find timed events make intuitive sense in situations where the outcome depends on Geralt's sense of timing. A good example is the Kayran fight, where you have to jump at exactly the right times and so on. Similarly, the parts where you have to click the left mouse button repeatedly make sense if Geralt has to quickly do a trivial task that does take some time, such as freeing yourself from the Kayran slime, or untying Loredo's Elven whores in the burning tower. So I guess I'm mostly OK with these, although it would be nice if somehow the players would be given more freedom.

Man...honestly, I'm having trouble getting into any of the mini-games, and at this point, don't like them. I had a horrible time with the fist fighting until I figured out how to button mash at the appropriate time. W1's fist-fighting was cool and funny when Geralt did his victory moves. Not interested in the dice poker and once was enough with the arm wrestling.

When I read your comment on the Kayran fight, I got scared. No-no-no! Not jumping! Doing some crazy keyed sequence at a certain time in a certain way is why I DON'T play console games (well, I just suck at them also). I'm in that Act and will be taking on the Karyan soon. I sense much anguish on my end.

Overall I loved TW2. Outside of the dice poker, I found the mini games dull and boring. The boxing was to repetitive, and took way too long to knock someone out. It may have been ok if there was more freedom and variety to the boxing, but clicking combinations of WASD for 10-15 per match was dull, and the arm wrestling was OK but very easy, the only match I lost was the Big Numa, and was forced to take steroids to beat him.

All in all the could have made the game world larger, adding more quests and interactions with more NPC'S, and kept the dice poker, and maybe a better revamped boxing, and it would have been perfect. Instead you spent more time trying to complete the boring mini games than actual game world exportation like in TW1.

A big thing that made dice poker, and boxing worthwhile in TW1 was playing against the king at the end or fist fighting an epic bonus character near the end of the game. you don't really get that big payoff for the mini games in TW2.

I enjoyed the fist fighting, probably just because of the graphics, found the arm-wrestling OK only because it was over quickly, but hated the dice poker. I think my dislike of the dice poker was primarily because they cut it back to a single game, combined with the appalling graphics. On a single game, it became entirely a matter of luck, with zero skill except for a very trivial ability to work out the odds. The number of orens involved weren't enough to make it worth while gambling for money, so it just became a grind of reloading until the dice fell in your favour.

I agree with shadownight that it was the rewards that made it worthwhile in TW1. It was worth any amount of slogging away at fistfighting to get the indirect reward for that. (Just noticed this isn't in the spoilers forum, so I can't enthuse as much as I'd like to).

I don't play the mini games unless I've got to like to obtain the spear head in Vegen. If you beat him two more times you get another item but it's totally useless in this point in the game as it's only a quest item and you've probably already done that part of the quest. So to me the mini games are a waste of time.

I like the mini games.

Its a quick easy way to earn a little experience and some money.

I usually do them when Im just killing a bit of time between quests and rather do something more interactive than meditating.

Actually I got a ton of money from arm wrestling Adam Pangratt over and over in chapter 2, just be sure to extinguish his campfire before talking to him... hehe!
