What a wonderful wake-up

Was about 5:00a.m.. Boyfriend left for work at a quarter to 4. So, I decided to go back to sleep. About an hour or so in...I was woken up by the smoke detector in someone's house. Normally, the stupid things go off when you're cooking or the steam from a shower can set them off, etc....never when there's a fire. So, I ignored it.

About 10 or so minutes later, my neighbour starts KICKING on my door. We've become best friends, so when she's doing that, I know something is wrong...

The apartment next door to me was filled with smoke. Apparently the IDIOT left his toaster oven on from making breakfast and something set on fire....and this is the SECOND time he's done this. The last time, in the winter a few years ago, he left a plastic potter plant on the steam radiator and caused the building to get all smoky.

This was worse though, the smoke was filling the entire hallway. I'm lucky, my house doesn't actually stink that bad...but that scared the living hell out of me. I'm lucky my neighbour did that, I had no clue what was going on...she helped bag up my cat and we got outside.

Stood outside for like an hour, it might have been shorter, but it sure felt like forever. Had like 4 cops and 2 firetrucks...they were running hoses up the hallway to his apartment...

*sigh* What a wonderful way to wake up huh? I'm glad everyone is safe...but man, I'm still shook up, I've never experienced this before...

Boy, the landlord is going to be pissed....

edit: Oh, he was lol. It looked like he wanted to punch him...

Glad you are Ok. :D A rather rude awakening.....

When I lived in Columbus, we were in the 'not-so-friendly' section of town, and had our own private arsonist for a week or so. I got woke up to fires three days in a row..... and that was just the building I lived in. Several other buildings had the same issue. That wasn't much fun.

Fun...

Turns out the newb was drunk and put a pizza in the toaster oven at 3 a.m. and forgot about it. There was no major damage, just smoke damage in house thankfully. Stupid newb...he just gave letters to the whole building...saying pretty much "I'm a stupid alcoholic, I'm sorry I almost killed everyone, I hope you find it in your hearts to forgive me and I'm going to rehab..." BS...I say his AA sponsor wrote those and told him to hand them out...

....:( I feel like crap, I don't think I've ever been that scared ever in my life...

Heh... that reminds me of something that happened at college...

Some kid came back to the dorms at around 2 a.m, and he was higher than a kite floating on helium. Anyways, he was hungry, and so he put a burrito in the microwave. No big deal, right?

Wrong. The idiot put the burrito in for 90 minutes instead of 90 seconds, and then he completely forgot about it. :pinch:

Needless to say, people were less than happy with him. Rushing outside at 2 a.m. in the middle of winter is not a fun experience.

Although, it did give people something to talk about around campus for a while...

Plenty of people at my college doing stupid stuff with the microwave too. Three dorm evacuations in a month, and that's not counting the drill. And nobody likes going out late at night, especially when he/she is bathing.

I figure since my dorm has to evacuate so much, we should just have a "fire potluck" every week.

When I was in college, The female dorm students were told when the fire alarm sounds grab a raincoat and a flashlight and get outside to the assembly area as soon as possible so you could be accounted for.

A very naive young lady I later came to know very well did just that at 1 AM when the alarm sounded. She had her flashlight, and a transparent rain coat. She slept in the nude.

For some reason the male students were told to take a blanket instead of a raincoat. My blanket got me a very good friend for the rest of my time in college.

Oh god Illi, I hope you're alright. That mindless idiot....I'd come down there myself and punch him a good one....

Yeah, I'm fine. My boyfriend came home from work yesterday and saw the look on my face and said "Man...what happened?" I pointed over to the neighbour's apartment and said "Idiot (I used a nastier term lol :P) could of killed us all...we had a fire." He just had that no fing way look on his face lol.

What's really sad is he DIDN'T write those letters because I talked to him last night and he just shrugged it off like it wasn't a big deal "It's just smoke..." were his exact words. In nearly all cases of fires...the smoke is what kills you. I really hope he's going to rehab...I knew he was a drunk...but yesterday, I saw TONS of needle mark scars on his arms and a few fresh ones, he's shooting something up :( It's sad...only a year older than me and he's so messed up...if he doesn't change his life, he'll be dead. But, if he won't apologize for what he did here, who's to say he'll even go to rehab...

LOL bben...classic :P Gotta love college haha.

LOL :P Good old coffee...I drink 6-12 cups a day though haha, I'm totally immune to it now I think  Been drinking it since age 5 too haha

That was quite interesting...I've lived in large apartment complexes nearly all my life (living in Chicago, you have to pretty much), and something like this has never happened. I was so concerned though, there was tons of smoke coming out of his apartment and I live next door...was scared that it was going to spread and we would lose everything we had. I just thank the Oshkosh fire department for being so fast to get here and get it under control. I personally called them yesterday afternoon and told them whoever responded to our fire to thank them so much :)
