A question regarding DLC content.

Hey all,

So I am in the process of adding the necessary info to make a lot of the awesome robot-part decorations into craftable decoration items for my own use... I was originally going to upload this, but then I stopped to consider something: Technically, since I am editing the meshes (Adding the workshop info), and thus have to include new copies of them, which can bypass the DLC entirely... if I were to upload it this way, people that DON'T have the DLC would then be able to use these decorations FROM the DLC...

Now, I could easily force my .esp to refer to the DLC as a master, to help fail-safe this, but anyone with a little FO4Edit know how could easily clean this up and get around it, using the content as they wanted.

So my question is, should I avoid uploading this? Should I just make the DLC a master and call it good, and if someone w/o the DLC is determined enough to access the deco's they can work it out?

I hope it makes sense what I am asking. I don't want to do anything that I shouldnt be, nor am I trying to share DLC content around. For the record it isnt done yet anyway, I just started. But just was curious what people thought.

That easy.

There are new stuff that can only be used with the DLC, like a robobrain, add them to the mod.

I think he wants to know not how to restrict, but is it allowed at all to make mods with DLC content that can be used without actual DLC.

That's want I want to know, too.

If the only changes you're making to the mesh is to add workshop info, then you can just refer to the vanilla textures. Anyone trying to steal it can then have some lovely purple low-definition decorations.

Although honestly, anyone willing to do dishonest behaviour to obtain the DLC will have vastly easier methods than reverse engineering your mod so I wouldn't get too concerned about it.

Polite, this actually dawned on me when I was making it, and thats exactly the route I went. One of the objects I was able to just reference the mesh without making changes at all, so it wont show up if you dont have the DLC (The hanging parts bag thing, you don't explicitly need to change anything on it to get it to function more or less properly)

The biggest concern to me was breaking Nexus rules honestly; as stated, there are far easier ways to obtain the full DLC than just a few models from it. But, it sounds like I am in the clear.

So thanks for the follow ups, appreciate it! Back to work I go..

Just to clarify in no uncertain terms, you are not allowed to release DLC assets without requiring people to have the DLC.

[edit]

I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to release original assets at all, though I may be wrong

[/edit]

I really don't think that the 'But I changed the workshop info' defence will cut any mustard with Bethesda, and likely not with Nexus.

Referring to the vanilla textures does sound like a much better idea, but releasing the unmodified meshes (despite the .nif being modified) might still get you in trouble.

But why not PM or Email one of the Nexus admins and (on the Bethesda forums) one of the Bethesda community managers, so you actually get the real answer rather than the opinions of a bunch of people who'd very much like your mod? At best you get a definitive all clear that you can cite if anyone claims your mod is breaking the rules. At worst, you save yourself wasted time, work, and a ban from Nexus.

Unless, of course, you'd rather not have the real answer.

Well, the meshes are currently useless as they would have to find the texture files somewhere else, they are not included. Some items don't even have the mesh included, so won;t work at all, and may even cause the mod to crash entirely w/o the DLC present. My intention isn't to offer any of the content to people that don't have it, by any means. Making the mod need the DLC as a master is doable too, but it makes things a bit wonky w/ FO4Edit due to DLC loading in a separate list now (DLClist.txt vs plugin.txt).

At any rate, the way the mod is setup currently, youd have completely useless content if you lacked the DLC. I may take that a step further, but I don't think itll be necessary.

Either way, I will follow up with an admin or mod on here to be absolutely sure.
