In terms of emotional impact from the game as a whole (as once experienced), I must say:

System Shock 2 - for scares etc

Homeworld - for the magic of space etc

NHL 2000 - for the perfect balance that made winning Stanley Cup feel like a real achievement etc

Medieval Total War - for the feel of the culture you're playing etc

Mass Effect 1 - for the sense of urgency (like no other), interest in team members, wow-like settings etc

In terms of hours spent on a game, however, there are a couple of other titles that come out on top and this because I wanted to mod them.

But the most memorable part of a game for me may be the ending of Mass Effect 3. Fortunately mostly in a positive sense because I had installed the Extended Cut Ending DLC; and happened to role-play a character for which the final choice came out quite suitable in my book (contrary to the experience of many others, I gather; with a second character and different final choice, I did not like the ending).

Ultima 6 - the game that started it all

Oblivion - suprisingly similar

mass effect 1, 3, and 2 in that order

Borderlands

Freelancer!

Fable 3 / or 2

all excellent open world games

I likes me some splinter cell conviction when I am feeling angry

Lots of final fantasy remakes on steam now cheap just finished ff3, it was very good as is the whole series but I don't really think of them as PC games regardless they are released on PC, with superior graphics.

I still play some unreal tournament for some dumb fun ;)

or fire up some mario bros on the emulator

I believe arcania and divinity 2 dragon knight saga both resemble Oblivion and use the same engine, I played them both on x360 and liked them. I have them for pc but havent played them and from youtube videos it seems the UI's are different for PC. Edited by masternoxx

Yes, Oblivion was a good game, too.

Many other games that people have mentioned here are uncharted territory for me. I'll take these as good tips for future entertainment.

But now that I have finally got a character going in the world of Skyrim SE properly, I must say this game is sailing up to rival ME1 as all time best for me. Tons of fun. Very impressive work.

Team Fortress 2. Playing it ever since Orange Box. Unreal Tournament Classic, which I was playing before Team Fortress 2. And Quake 2, which I was playing before Unreal Tournament Classic.

Homeworld 2. Remastered version is also quite good; I was afraid they'd butcher it after seeing (or, rather, hearing) that abysmal trailer.

Heroes of Might&Magic 3. Sure, 4 has better music, and 5 has more of everything, but better music doesn't equal better game, as well as more stuff.

Fallout 2 (then Vegas, then 4, but 4 is there only because of settlement building; honestly, it's what has saved the game from failing miserably).

FTL: AE with Captain's Edition bulk mod.

Europa Universalis 3 and 4, and also Crusader Kings 2

Mass Effect 1 and 2 (3 wasn't bad just because of the ending, it was all bad. Andromeda? It's trying to be the new ME1, but is too obviously a bad console port to pull that off)

As for TES series, I still like Daggerfall the most, even though I saw Arena first. Skyrim is passable. Oblivion is horrible, and Morrowind is just a revolting pit of low-poly mushrooms, insects and squalor.

X-Com: UFO Defense. Yes, just the first game. Everything that followed was a varying degree of crap, except probably Xenonauts.

Oh, and Stronghold, of course. Didn't like the Crusader addon much, but everything that followed was just awful, except for passable Stronghold Crusader 2 — but it doesn't have a full campaign, and has very limited strategic options, so, not as good as the first game.

Honourable mention: Freelancer.
