Why are settelments so dirty?

Nuclear reactors (which are in EVERYTHING in this universe, even in Radios) would give off radiation for decades, and the big ones can leak radiation for hundreds of years, look at the real life Chernobyl for example. The radiation from bombs would not last very long (relatively speaking), and certainly not for 200 years, so some of you are correct in that regard. Its the radiation from all of these reactors that really screws the world of Fallout in terms of recovery.

Everyone says Chernobyl, but it hardly the same. For one it a leakage not a bomb, third is that bomb donated when it fell into ground and may have triggered cars. We have no real life example of anything like it to compare.

You can find testing sites in Nevada

Yeah minngarm is right. Bombs have been dropped plenty of times, and bombs in this universe work the same as the fallout universe. We're a little off topic though.

You can't compare any of the fusion devices used in the Fallout Universe to real-life reactors, because currently existing reactors are all fission reactors. The specifics of how a fusion core or fusion cell would degrade or emit radiation is up to the imagination of the game makers, but it's besides the point anyway because it's obvious in the game lore that the radiation issues in Fallout stem from the bombs dropped during the war, not the reactors.

I agree with you OP, and it bugs me too. My grandmother grew up in a shanty shack. Literally. She was the cleanest person you've ever met despite living in some horrid conditions and literally starving. I know people would still sweep, bury the corpses, and use milk paint like in the old days. It would be imperative if you wanted to keep from getting sick, which is even more important in Fallout.

In the same vein, the clothes bug me. I see people say things like they don't have clothing factories, etc. Industrial clothing making processes are only about 175 years old. For most of human history we used natural fabrics and tailors or seamstresses made beautiful clothing. I love to look at photos of clothing in museums and plenty of 200 or even 400 year old garments survived. They were better made than today's clothes and many are works of art. So yeah, Ann Hargraves would be making you some epic outfits. None of this held together with spit and staples nonsense.

But in the end, we know why they did it that way. It just fit the games art direction. Just like it fits Mad Max, etc. The difference is that I only spend 2 hrs with Mad Max. With Fallout I spend hundreds of hours and I am 'in' that world, trying to build an empire. So it annoys me too, but I can't fault Bethesda for it. I'd rather start with a game that fits their artistic vision and then mod in whatever I want.

Nope, not these.

All nukes we that been used In history have donated in air for less power, not face first into the ground like fallout nukes.

Except if I was wrong of course.

Well the entire aesthetic of Fallout is more in line with what it would be like like a decade or two after a nuclear exchange, not 200. The latent radiation, still-edible canned and boxed foods, and all the buildings being in relatively good condition (everything would be much more overgrown after 200 years).

My advice would be to just accept it all as 'Falloutisms'.

Not the case in fallout 1,2 and some places in New Vegas,

NV had trash every where.

Anyhow, wastelanders may simply not know how good cleaning is, in our timeline in the middle ages the link between cleanliness and illness was not yet known and trash with feces were the street, people hardly bathed and it was just worse than fallout.
