Oblivion can't find master file oblivion.esm

Recommended Posts

Yes, I can confirm the "M" folder belongs to that mod. It's under Data->Meshes->Clothes.

That problem with removing a folder/file from Windows XP is common and quite annoying.

I will not miss that OS.

As bben46 suggested it may be a problem with another user account dependent on the file. Are you running multiple user accounts?

Have you tried changing the read only status of the folder and all subfolders when prompted? Rarely ever worked for me but worth a try. You can alter this by right clicking main folder and choosing properties then uncheck the box and apply.

Lastly, sometimes I could remove the folder/file after a system restart.

Just a few suggestion off the top of my head.

Edit for spelling.

May be an issue with too long path, like C:\Program Files\Beth.... .... ...\... which cause problem in certain operations (just another reason to install in something like C:\Games\Oblivion .... being a good idea). To resolve this issue is temporarily renaming some folders in the patch beginning from the root (like "Bethesta Softworks" to B) until the file becomes accessible. Notice than the issue is prone to return when the folders names are restored... So, again... the curse of looooonnnng names.....

Some common reasons includes too (file being used to indicate files or folders):

1 - The file is being used by some other process.

2 - The file uses ACL (Access Control List) which prevents even the administrator to delete it... this can be solved taking ownership on the file, since the administrator can change the file access rights and delete it afterward.

3 - sometimes the ACL has unorthodox ACE (Access Control Entries) . You may need to download and run a program called Cacls.exe to correct it.

4 - The file list got corrupted (oh my, this one is annoying), lets hope the chkdsk can recover a consistent state enough to allow the file deletion.

5 - The file or something in the path has special reserved names or someway invalid name. This case includes non ascii characters, leading spaces, points, etc ... Sometimes this issue can be solved using command mode (call the console using the cmd command in the "Run" on the Start icon). Try rename the file using part of the name and a wild card like ? or * (be careful here).

Well, I think a covered some the main reasons... believe me, XP has an impressive amount of causes for that issue. I fear I might become unclear in some parts due to poor English sentence construction, feel free to ask for explanation where needed.

Anyway, the above must be considered guide lines and directions to help searching for more detailed explanation on each case. Good Luck.

Yes, but you should always delete the "complete" mod... deleting textures and files and having ESP/ESM pointing to them is really bad idea.

You should think about reinstalling the game at a shorter path, even on XP, least the problem not recurring any time soon.

PS: At this point I'm not sure if the official patches put things on those folders, if they do, you can't simply delete the folders.

Well the only official patch I tried to use was the latest one for installations with SI and it ended up experiencing some sort of benign problem.

Motherboards with Nvidia chipsets have a sad history with the discs controllers. I tell from proper experience, wasting 2 motherboards until finding where the problem was.

My advice is for you to look the System log you can access from:

Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Event Viewer -> Windows Logs -> System

take note of entries marked as Error or Critical and search for their "Event ID" meaning on the web.

It's a recent problem. I used to be able to run Oblivion for as long as I wanted. All of the solutions I looked up were either irrelevant or did not present a way to resolve the problem for specific software (seeing as it only happens when running Oblivion).

I'm just going to continue on until it happens again and I'll note the exact error message the next time it happens.
