kevkiev
Noticed that NMC's texture mod description page referred to running a utility called "gamebooster" to increase performance. Looks like this is the utility. Anybody try this thing and notice an improvement, in particular for FONV?
ita
Why pay for software that defragments a few directories, downloads drivers and shuts down background processes and Windows services when you can do it yourself, for free?
kevkiev
It's actually freeware, so I'm thinking it might be kinda convenient.
ita
I suppose there's no harm in trying it out, the worst case scenario might just give you a bluescreen or something.
soot00
Yep I use it. Suggestion tho, just use the booster so that it drops background tasks ONLY, don't use the defragmenter, screwed up my Fallout 3 when I tried it
kevkiev
Was a bit iffy about the whole thing and initially decided just to O/C my video card a little bit more instead. But I poked around on the webz some more and didn't find anything too discouraging about the utility, and considering a fellow nexusite uses it (thanks for the reply soot00), I went for the download (the free version, apparently there's a pay version now too). Also snagged a similar app called "GBoost" (totally free). Ran a capital "Q" quick and dirty test using the "video stress test" in Half Life Lost Coast. Used whatever settings the test used as default, including 1024x768 resolution. I run Vista 64x but pretty lean, no instant messenger or music services or stuff like that. Though I do have the "Aero" theme turned on at any given time. (Pretty theme with semi-transparent glassy toolbar and the like.) Didn't tweak either utility, and just went with whatever processes they shut down by default. 1. Running as normal without any tweaks other than shutting down obvious apps like email and internet browsers: FPS was 230.4 2. Started up GBoost. It shut down some processes the most obvious one being my Aero theme: FPS was 232.59 3. Restarted my PC, restored Aero (running GBoost actually takes away the Aero option 'til you restart) and ran Game Booster. Oddly, it left Aero running: 228.47 FPS So, at least on my PC neither utility made much of a difference in FPS. Ah well... worth a shot anyways. bben46
I have been using it for quite a while. It seems to help some, depending on what background processes you have running. In my case, it shuts down several processes that like to go online when you don't expect them to - to update something that really doesn't need to be updated right at that moment. One thing it doesn't shut down is Skype, and I have had my game sometimes crash when a Skype call came in. If you do get it, be sure to get the FREE version and not the premium (for pay) version to test it first. And watch for attempts to sneak in a couple of other pesky programs, like several other programs made by the same company plus the useless ask toolbar and even more useless and hard to remove ask search. The way its worded is like saying YES, I don't want your trash program. So be sure to READ the page where it offers these carefully. Here is a legitimate and guaranteed malware free source for GameBooster as well as many other utility programs. http://majorgeeks.com/Iobit_Game_Booster_d5952.html
kevkiev
Thanks for the feedback bben. Yeah, I think the utility of this utility is likely quite user-specific. Me, I don't have a lot (really any) online stuff going on. (I have skype downloaded but have never activated it.) So it looks like I'm just not the kind of user it's really aimed at. I actually ran across a youtube vid where the guy ran the Call of Duty performance test and got something like 80 FPS without Game Booster and 87 after running it. So it appears to indeed makes sense for some folks. I ended up uninstalling it though, as I guess my current setup doesn't benefit too much. But should I ever get up to speed with the modern world  I may give it another go. When I used to do a lot of overclocking/benchmarking I'd scour my system for unnecessary stuff I could shut off to squeeze out as many FPS as I could, so this kind of app could be convenient for that sort of thing too. (Kinda lost interest in that scene awhile ago tho.) I was kinda surprised that, unlike GBoost, Game Booster left my Aero theme running, but I think you can tweak the app a bit to shut down more stuff than it does by default. ... the way its worded is like saying YES, I don't want your trash program. Man, that's ^ just hilarious (in a nervous laughter kind of way). Really gotta have your wits about ya when downloading stuff on the interwebz! (I always at least follow the "not before I've had at least 2 coffees" rule  )
profnewbie
I agree with soot00, don't use the defrag(could be a big mistake) but do shut down background processes. I use it at times, but there's not a great improvement unless your using a weak system or low ram. profnewbie--new but growing
