The Promise

Tears are those for sorrow's men,

But tears are clear and blank,

Yet tears were wept when on his knees,

When death had come and banked,

No mercy for the blood that spilled,

The only drink she drank.

She lay there in the misty cold,

In a pool of raven red,

Her lover fixed in timely stone,

Marked by shock and dread,

His hands still painted with her blood,

When they found her stocked with lead.

The trees had seen the selfish act,

The wind was on the move,

But he was faster still to water,

Through every guarded groove,

Competing with the laces gold,

A promise left to prove.

The sun was dying in laces gold,

An army not far behind,

He could see them swallow the leafy walls,

As they tried to shoot him blind,

Darkness flanking every move,

The water still to find.

When at last it came within his view,

The Calvary in his sight,

He threw open the door and fell to the floor,

The captain a mighty fright,

He reached for his sword and swung his sword,

And began his greatest fight.

Lead to his nose and silver at eye,

He swung back with such force,

That he plunged the sword at once in heart,

And felt but no remorse,

The Calvary shot him to the ground,

And departed on their horse.

In his hand he held her face,

That promise he kept till the end,

To find a home for him and her,

To live with his only friend,

That promise he always held in hand,

And swore to always defend.

He felt no guilt and no regret,

For he was true and frank,

And rested his head but spared to cry,

For tears are clear and blank,

But tears were but the only thing,

The only thing he drank.
