Aurielius
Though to most US members this may seem trivial I am sure that in the UK it is epic. Just some background...News Corporation (parent owner of News of the World) has been rocked in the last week by claims that its best-selling Sunday tabloid hacked in to the phones of relatives of British soldiers killed in action, of missing children and those caught up in the July 2005 London bombings. The closure of the 168-year-old title, which sells more than 2.5m copies a week and which Mr Murdoch senior bought in 1969, will be seen as an attempt to end the association of News Corp with the scandal over voicemail interception by its journalists which has been raging for more than four years. I just curious if our UK members view this scandal rag's closure as a good or bad thing, at least to me it always was representative of 'yellow journalism' in it's most egregious form. kvnchrist
That's crazy. Is there any proof to this allegation. I know there was some talk about people going after this man's holdings in the U.K. but you never know about some people. You can hardly know the capabilities of people you've known for years, on the same forum, let alone someone you've never met. Though I believe in human natures, I don't put anything past those who dabble in greed or politics. What people don't realize is that not that many people get their views from the media. They find those media sources that reflect their own views and rally around those. Liberals or conservatives have already made up their minds. Those in the middle are up for grabs, but they are in the middle for a reason and will take all the time they need to make up their own minds,
JimboUK
The closure will make very little difference to anything, Rebekah Brooks (formerly Wade) who is right in the middle of all this will keep her job and as such News Internationals reputation will stay in the mud. She either has dirt on someone or knows where the bodies are buried, if not then one has to ask why she hasn't been hung out to dry. There is a lot more to this than just a bit of hacking. News International partly own the main pay TV broadcaster in the UK (BSkyB), they want to take full control but we have rules on media ownership that meant it had to either be cleared by a minister or by the Competition Commission. The deal was due to be given the go ahead and then this blew up, now the decision has been put off and people are rightly questioning if this organisation is "Fit and Proper". The closure of the News of the World is a cynical attempt to give the impression that they are "Fit and Proper" and thus keep the deal open. It gets worse, Murdochs main daily paper in the UK is The Sun, it publishes daily except for Sundays, only a few days ago SunOnSunday was registered as a website suggesting they were already going to dump the News of the World before the story about hacking of dead relatives broke. It doesn't end there, the Prime Minister not only has ties to Rebekah Brooks but also employed a gentleman by the name of Andy Coulson as his parties communications director, Andy Coulson had already resigned from the News of the World over hacking allegations. Mr Coulson is expected to be questioned again by police tomorrow and faces being arrested. You may well ask why the police haven't done much up to this point, the reason why is going to lead to an even bigger scandal, News International have been paying off officers. So we have the largest private media organisation in the country hacking the phones and emails of dead servicemen and their families, the same people interfering with evidence in the murder of a schoolgirl. The governments former communications director sure to be jailed, a Prime Minster who has gone silent knowing he is far to close to these people. We also have a very dodgy deal involving pay TV, the decision by a minster in favour of Murdoch being pay pack for support at the last election. And to top it all we have the police on the take. The next few weeks should be hugely entertaining.

It makes the National Inquirer look like the Washington Post. Give it a quick scan if you can hold down your lunch while reading it.
brokenergy
When News-Corp falls that's when people should cheer, not when News of the World closes. Remember that Murdoch owns lots of media publication and these include BSkyB and FOX news. While this spells the end of NotW, he can always make another or take over another media pubication. Nothing has really changed.

I know nothing about the publication, but I do know that there are many on the left who are desperate to shut down anything that Repurt Murdock controls. Mostly because they can't stand Fox news. I'm always skeptical of anything that happens to anything that carries his name, when there are so many people who are against him. I'm not a fan of followers of band wagons. The Murdoch press here supports who they think will win, Thatcher/Major in the 80s/90s, Blair 97-07 and Cameron last year. He's very good at reading public opinion, he goes with it and then claims to have influenced it. Anyone who follows politics closely will have noticed that public opinion changes first, well anyone but the politicians themselves who see him as some great asset. kvnchrist
Well, I don't know the man, or his publications over there. He may be as shifty as possible, as you say. As far as the politicians thinking he's essential, I'd really watch that. Anytime politicians think they can't get along without someone, there's usually something funny going on deep down. That's been my opion of the politics over here and I will bow to you guys wisdom of the situation over there. People know their business far better than anyone else, and I hate the way some people over here think they can speak for other peoples. All that I do know is that there have been rumblings of the hyper left trying to take this man down, for political reasons. That's the only reason I commented on the subject. Politics aside, If they've done something as vile as you say, then they deserve what they get. I hope that if there is a den of thieves, then you guys get to the bottom of it and clean them all out, top to bottom. Nobody who has lost a loved you. Military or not, deserves to have their privacy invaded and anyone who would do so is below, scumbags. Those who have defended your country deserve the highest respect and those who disrespect them and their families deserve the fullest extent of the law and public scrutiny. If Murdock is apart of this then he too deserves to get run though the wringer. I hope they hang the bastard.
JimboUK
Well Coulson has been arrested so they must have something concrete. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/phone-hacking/8617707/News-of-the-World-phone-hacking-live.html Cameron seeems to have woken up to the seriousness of the situation as well.
