v1.5.157.0.1 Launcher CTD

[Doing a little bit of copypasta here from my post on Bethesda.net, in order to maximize the number of people who might find a similar solution.]

I suspect there are many different causes for many different issues all going on at once. Some people have immediate CTDs, some can get to the menu but can't load a character before a CTD, and some face short-lived black screens before the entire thing shuts down unceremoniously (such as myself).

I would like to confirm I have also had success with getting the game to work again by...

  • deactivating (not deleting!) all my Nexus mods
  • deleting all traces of my HUD mods
  • then deleting my plugins.ini, and having Nexus / Fallout 4 cook a new one up

I suspect it was the last step that really fixed the issue. It seems that with all the Beta shenanigans and having to dig into the .ini's to work with mods with Survival prior (thanks again for all that guys...) my system was messed up when the proper patch came though.

This has been bothering me for a while, and I am very glad to have finally found the answer for my variant of this problem.

Good luck to everyone else looking for their solution.

Hopefully that helps solve at least one person's problem.

Try disabling the Steam Overlay. I was having an issue with a CTD on fast travel after the 1.5 update & the issue went away after disabling Steam Overlay. Why the 1.5 update causes issues between Fallout 4 & the Steam Overlay is beyond me. Makes no sense.

I have found a fix (I think) on one of the forums on Bethesda.net and don't ask me why, or how, this works because I have absolutely no idea. But I was able to play Fallout 4 for four hours tonight without any problems at all. And that is the first time since last Thursday.

On the forum they said to update a mod called "Full Dialogue Interface" because that mod has been updated to 1.5 compatibility. I did not have that mod installed so I installed it using NMM tonight. All the rest of my UI mods are active except for DEF_UI and I had to disable that one because it would still crash the game. Adding that new mod stabilized the game and allowed me to play tonight. Whether my luck continues and I can play tomorrow remains to be seen.

quick fix for those that still need it. deactivating your ui editing mods dont get rid of all traces of them. apparently deleting the interface folder in yo data ( or data meshes 'i foget') folder can fix the ctd. most likely installing better dialog overwrote the bad files this is why you game now works i would imagine.
