crashing because resolutions doesnt match monitor

Not a big deal, but both of my fallout games, new vegas and fallout 3 will not start at all if the resolution of the game is higher or lower than the resolution of my monitor. Why?

Also, I wanted to add that the only reason I am lowering my resolution is because in mods like the mini hideout I get a tremendous amount of lag when looking at the fish tank, same deal with the underground hideout except there I don't know what is causing the lag.

Here are my PC specs

1 GTX 460 1 gb (might upgrade to a 6950 2gb)

AMD 1100t

6gb patriot 1333 RAM

1 terabyte hdd.

my case has plenty of ventilation and cooling, low temps even under load. Its not as bad but I have the same problem with this in new vegas, and I would really like to get to the bottom of what is causing it. It seems in the game world that the lag can happen when looking at a completely random object. For instance out front of megaton I have noticed that one of Doc Hoff's guards carries a assault rifle. Now if I or anyone else carries it we are fine, but whenever I look at that person wielding that gun in particular my frames drop from 60 to 20. Look away, and everything is fine again.

I am sorry this was supposed to be an edit of the above post and not a double post, I am not one of those people....

It should not be a problem unless the chosen resolution can't be used with the monitor at all. That's is not a problem with the game but the monitor itself. Look in your video driver control panel the list of resolutions your monitor is able to work and try one of them.

Still I think the problem is elsewhere, a good starting point is looking at this page for Tweak guide. The part of enabling multthreading may be specially helpful since the clock speed by core is not the highest on that CPU.

Although it seen odd, try installing audio codecs (K-lite can be a good option), this game is (in)famous for not being friendly toward the original codecs, which can lead to overall game performance issues, including problems with graphic stuttering and choppiness.

Another thing to try, regarding mouse/keyboard lag, is reducing the "Maximum pre-rendered frames", found in the 3D settings at Nvidia Control Panel.

nosisab thanks for the guides. And as for the resolution I was trying to play at 1366x768. My monitors max resolution is 1920x1080.

That resolution is listed as accepted in my Nvidia Control Panel for an old 9600GT, it's probably possible in your monitor/drive combination and give no problem. But I'm yet on the trail the problem is not resolution, your video card is far better than mine and has double the VRAM, and I can play the game fairly in 1920x1080 providing not using too high texture mods. 1600x900 can be a better try too.

PS: On the other hand, my processor is a 965BE, with only four cores but higher individual clock, where it can do a difference (whatever it would not be caused by the resolution in that case but heavy scripted areas), hence the hint for the multithreading, albeit Fallout 3 is more sensible than Oblivion on that regard and does not like more than 2 physical cores at once.

not to mention my cpu is actually overclocked at the moment to 4.2ghz, and don't worry I do have liquid cooling on it. Stays nice and cozy at 35 degrees Celsius under load.

I have just finished changing out my drivers for 275.55 beta. I did a clean install and will now try my games. Wish me luck.
