Hi all !!

I'm new to this forum

Here's the problem:

Games returns to desktop after launch of game. I've installed patch 1.7 and check all mods for goty.

I believe I know the problem but don't know if there is solution.

I'm running Win7pro and the game is installed in the X86 folder.

Is the game compatible with Win7pro???

If so what must I do to correct the problem

Thanks for any and all help you all can provide

rj

PS My system meets all requirement and surpases recommended specs

Thanks for the quick response!!!!!

The load order is the the orginal for goty

This presistent problem is with both the Steam platform and the retail box fo goty.

I've tried loading with just the Fallout 3.esm and with the 5 mods that come with goty

I've also tried the ini approach since I do have a quad processor to no avail.

thanks again

Here's specs ( this this helps)

cpu intel i7 950

12g ram

ATI 5700 in crossfire

Western Terabite hhd

Service pack 1 build 7601

mb ASUS Sabertooth X58

Try reinstalling the game in a different folder then program files. Even better: A different partition on you hard-disk. (assuming you have more then 1 partition)

Also, the 5 "mods" you mentioned are actually the official DLC's (Download-able Content) A mod is third-party add-on. The dlc's are made by the Bethesda guys.

You might also want to check the load order for the dlc's. The correct load order would be:

Fallout3.esm

Anchorage.esm

ThePitt.esm

BrokenSteel.esm

PointLookout.esm

Zeta.esm

Thank you to both Bethjunkie and BlackRampage for the responses to my difficulty with Fallout 3 goty

But NO solution has been effective

I hope to have on going dialog with someone out there so that I may begin to enjoying the game.

I've played Morrowind and presently still playing Oblivion. I'm familiar with mods and how to use them but this problem (to my best estimation) isn't related to load order since I've tried to load just the fallout.esm and still the game crashes back to desktop

Also recently I've tried the Unofficial fallout 3 Patches. Had a hard time finding them but that didn't work either.

At present the game is loadiing from disc in its own folder and not within the Steam platform

I appologize for my lack of knowledge of computer programing but when I put together this system I thought I would be downward compatible with older game like fallout 3.

Thank you and I'm still hoping I can find assistance

Bethesda games use the Windows Registry for some things. This makes it nearly impossible to have 2 copies working on the same computer. If you installed the steam version first, it made entries in the registry. then installing a DVD version changes SOME of those entries and creates others. This will confuse the game. The steam client will try to update the wrong one if you installed the DVD version on top of the steam version. And if you try to patch the DVD version, it will patch things that cause problems for the steam version. The steam and DVD versions are not mutually compatible. Use one or the other and not both.

I suggest completely removing BOTH versions then running a registry cleaner to remove any left over entries. Then deciding which version you want and only installing that one.

To use a registry cleaner properly - First download and install the cleaner. Then, immediately after removing everything - including the ini files, any utility programs such as FOSE and removing the entire set of folders from both installs you MUST reboot the computer. Then run the cleaner, then reboot again.

By removing everything then rebooting, the registry entries are set to 'orphan' status, meaning they are not associated with any program on the computer. The cleaner will remove any entry marked as orphan. The rebooting again allows Windows to do some housecleaning in the registry to fill in the holes left by cleaning.

My preferred cleaner is the FREE Ccleaner Slim- available here: http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

ricmoors - Hello!

I'm running Fallout 3 on a Win7 Home Premium 64-bit Operating system & in the default folder in Program Files (x86) with no trouble.

Can I just get a few things clear first, you're instaling Fallout 3 from a disc?

It's just you mentioned Steam.

The GOTY disc does not need any more official patching, it should already be 1.7.0.3.

If you've installed from disc into the default directory it should be in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3

Go to that location & look at the files & folders.

Do any of them have little padlocks on them?

If so, drag the affected files/folders onto your desktop & move them back again.

Are you using Fallout Mod Manager (FOMM)?

http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=640

It will really help you out with using mods.

If you don't have New Vegas, just get "Old FOMM".

Once installed, you can check that your load order is correct.

As others have said on here, Fallout 3 crashing on startup is often due to a missing master (.esm) file.

Make sure in FOMM that your load order is Fallout3.esm FOLLOWED by the DLC .esm files.

I don't use G4WLive & it gave me problems when I tried installing the DLCs & stopped Fallout 3 from running with them, fortunately FOMM has a workaround.

In FOMM go to - Tools - Install Tweaker & tick the box next to "Use fake XLive.dll" & see if that helps you to run Fallout 3.

Hope this helps!

FYI, Fallout 3 officially NOT compatible on Both Win 7 x86 and Win 7 x64. See here..XLS doc,line 7553,

Although on some ppl it worked fine, this probably related with your hardware...try running game with single GPU and update your driver..

Meh, I really don't care about what Microsoft's official stance is on what they deem compatible with it or not.

Besides, I've got Windows 7 64 bit and 2 graphics processors. Never had a single compatibility problem. My laptop: Win 7 home premium 64 bit: Same.

Let alone that there are tons of people here who are running Fo3 just fine on Win 7.
