Greenmote
Hello, I only got oblivion for my pc not long ago (however I've had it for my Xbox for over a year). My problem is the performance, my computer can't run it well and I dont understand why, here is my hardware specifications : • Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 • 2.4GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 8MB Cache • Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium • 2048MB RAM Memory • 320GB Hard Drive • DVD Re-Writer Drive • 256MB NVidia GeForce 8300 GS • Realtek High Definition Audio I ran the test at www.systemrequirementslab.com and got a great result. soloman02
Your problems the result of several factors: Yep, your video card is a huge one. You have a low end nvidia card, even though it is DX10, my 7900GS beats it in performance. Here is a VGA chart to compare video cards for many games:http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_200...2&chart=294 That should tell you where you card falls: your card is not listed, the 8500GT is better than your card and it performs significantly worse than my card. You can get an 8600GTS for about $150 on newegg.com. That card beats mine and my card is the same price. I don't know how much money you wish to spend, but the 8800GTS 320 is $280 on newegg and would be the best choice if you can spend that much. I also recommend using newegg for purchasing computer parts, they have one of the best reputations. I personally have not had any problems with them. Plus, their prices are competitive and beat the heck out of any brick and mortar store (unless the item is on sale, cause sometimes they have good sales) Also you are running windows vista, which is a memory hog. Seeing how Oblivion is a resource hog as well, vista and oblivion could be at odds with each other if you do not have enough memory. 2GB should be enough, but maybe not. Run oblivion and minimize it. then go to the task manager and look at what vista is using for memory and what oblivion is using. With my setup oblivion takes up 350 MB and all other processes added in my total memory usage is 800MB out of 2GB of memory. I have heard that vista can chew through as much as 1GB of memory ( I do not have vista so I do not know for a fact). It is my opinion that you should have 512 to 1 GB of memory that is not used when playing a game (this is my opinion, I do not know if it actually effects performance). Your main concern is your video card, upgrade that and you will see great improvement, which will allow you to decide if you should either go back to XP Pro, or buy another 2GB of RAM or do nothing. Another thing to help would be to stop any processes you do not need, such as antivirus. also, running a virus scan and antispyware scans regularly will help with overall performance (if you don't already do so). Also, here is a site that shows you how to tweak VIsta or XP to run better, it also has a guide to making Oblivion run better:http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html I run Oblivion at 1280x1024x32 cause that is my LCD screens native resolution (if you have a LCD screen it is recommended that you use the native resolution, usually it is the highest resolution available in your video drivers). The setting I use are:Texture=largeall the fade sliders are in the middlegrass dist. = middleview dis=middledistant land offshadows and shadow filtering offspec distance offHDR offWater normalother water/windows effects offBlood highAA off I get 15 to 30 FPS in outdoor scenes and it lags some when I run/ run on a horse. Indoors I get much higher frames except when there is a dense fog/mist in the air, then my frame drop so much that iit lags slightly. My specs: AMD athlon XP 3700+ @ stock2GB PC3200EVGA nvidia geforce 7900GS @ stock2 80GB hard drives420 wattThermal Take PSUOnboard LANOnboard SoundWindows XP pro 32bit Hopefully this can help you. Dark0ne
Just to compound the above the post: Your bottle neck is most definately, no doubt about it, the video card. Swap it out for either a card from the 7900 range, or from MINIMUM 8600 range, preferably 8800, and you will be ontop of the world.
