Faust870
Ok now im sure all of you have heard about the famous Stonehenge... What excatly do you think it is? or what it was used for? I watched a show on discovery last night all about stonehenge, and they said some things that what people think it is A lot of people thought it had to to with astronomy... others thought it predicted when solar eclipes would occur... From one angle it shows where the sun sets, from another it shows where is rises.... Many people also think it was a burial site... Well i made this for a good debate... Lets get it started! Pob
Well Duh, its a bunch of stones on a hill (ish). No seriously, I credit the Drudic temple theory (summer solsitce effort) you know it was built as a temple to the gods/nature and on the summer solstice the sun shines in exactly the right spot. Also of note is that in Ireland there is a simialr monument (but it is buried underground and that the back of the tomb/mound can only be seen (using natural sunlight) on the winter solstice. Its also thought to be druidc
Malchik
There are many stone circles in England - Avebury ring is IIRC the biggest, then there is Arbor Low in Derbyshire (alright look it up on an internet map) etc.. I am no expert on them I'm afraid. It would be interesting to know if there is a commonality of alignment. This would add backing to one commonly held view that they were druidical sacrificial sites. Ancalagon
Wasn't another theory that Stonehenge was a callendar of the Solstices? I went there like three years ago (did some canalboating, visited Bath, Chester, London ^_^ love that city...) and I thought it was really cool looking, and the fact that there were no rocks of that size in the area, and that they were pulled from some place far away.... But I agree with Pob, the Druids did it, since its purpose does seem of a Nature-ly theme....thingy...yeah...<_<
Pikeman85
pretty sure the Druids did it. And it predicts the seasons rather well. So I would say that it was a sun worshipping sight, most likely.
confused
the answer to the question is no one really knows. know one really knows the purpose of the monument or how long it has been there. different people have their own opinions and theories but none that have proof. yes some may have more reasoning than others and make more sense but it does not necesseraly mean that it is correct. for all we know it could be for something which to us dont make sense but did many years ago when it was places there. for all we know it could just be an art piece

Malchik
Hi! Stop spamming guys or I'll get the Spear of Spamdoom out. Sensible debate was requested. I know very few of us are able to be sensible but... As a matter of interest a book called Megaliths has just been published and was reviewed in the Times (UK paper) last Saturday. I quote from it: "These stones are the remnants of a technology dedicated to intelligence. When we look at Stonehenge, of Castlerigg, we see the internet of its day, a system for connecting with some wider event, a communications system. Each of the great stone monuments was a nexus where people and energies gathered. Considered in those terms, the stones are simply an example of the human need to find focus. Yet what we see in this technology also shames us; because, compared with these great stones, which seek to tap into and focus the energy of the earth and sky and seasons, our communications systems are, for the most part, mere toys. Lacking gravity, they do not connect us to a wider reality; rather they implicate us in their own failure. Gravity makes the megaliths true, just as it makes them mysterious. This is their power."
