Best way to choose a Vault number?

As long as it's not taken by a canon Vault, you shouldn't worry too much about it. You don't even have to stick to the lore of the 122 Vaults, god knows Bethesda throws its own lore out the window with every release. Just do a quick Nexus search for the number you want, it might be confusing if, say, you pick Vault 98 when there's already a mod called that for Fallout 4, but other than that who cares.

You can't account for every fanfic or small Fallout 3 player home mod... That would be insane.

Just look at the location of the Vault and choose accordingly. West coast is low numbers and east coast is high numbers.

I think I am going to use Vault 102 in my mod, as a bit of a throwback to Vault 12 in the original Fallout. I thought about actually doing a little quest where you have to recover a water purifier chip. I'm trying to do a lot of references to Fallout 1 and Fallout Tactics.

Oh man you know what if this is true and you are trying to bring a little FO1 into FO4....We need a Necropolis! FO3 had it's version in Underworld was a lot disappointing.......And Goodneighbor doesn't count.

As for the OP....Write numbers on pieces of paper and draw one from a hat! But seriously if you find it hard to pick a number why not remove the number from age, damage or whatever ie Vault 1xx as for terminals? oops water damage.... XD Or you know the better advice of ignoring previous mod vault numbers for FO3 and FNV only watch out for FO4 mods if you care, again doesn't matter unless you want compatibility, to be nice, w/e your reason.

Good luck,

Geoff

I'm a bit busy with my plot about the Mariposa super mutants that remained loyal the the idea of 'The Unity' long after the fall of 'The Master'.

The attempted genocide by the Brotherhood of Steel, the escape out east under the leadership of Gammorin, the attempts at curing the sterility, their fight with the Calculator, and their eventual betrayal of the Midwestern faction of the Brotherhood of Steel.

But who knows, maybe someday I will have time... but don't get your hopes up.
