Running Mods without oblivion disc

If you made a copy of the CD back when it was intact as a .iso file, you can use that. Mods will work fine. I don't recommend using a crack for it, because they often contain viruses and conflict with mods like OBSE.

Here is how to play Oblivion without a disk: Go to Steam. Create an account if you didn't yet. Download the Steam client from the site. Buy Oblivion from Steam. Congratulations, you now have a diskless game with as many backups as you need.

If not, there is not any legal way to play. Especially not one that would help.

Just to be contentious:

Technically, (as I comprehend it), downloading software such as this is not illegal. What is illegal is a person who stands under relevent statute, downloading said software. It could be argued that such statues are unlawful, and thus by extension illegal themselves.

On the other hand; Bethesda did a stunning job on Oblivion, and probably do deserve the money.

Wrong. In both the US and UK, who's laws we have to operate under, it is Illegal to download copyrighted materials for the purpose of bypassing any Digital protection - This is the definition of piracy. Please do NOT give any legal advice that may get either this site or a user in trouble. Any discussion of piracy or even debate of whether it is right or not is forbidden here. If you want to debate whether or not it is legal or moral - or if the law is illegal  please take your arguments to one of the many sites that do allow it.

In the US (Not sure about UK) It is legal to make a copy of a program you own for archive (back up) purposes though.

I will close this to keep people from getting themselves banned. :whistling:

Here is a PM that I received that I believe is relevant to this thread.

My thanks to lgpmichael for this bit of info.

Hi,

I saw you locked the thread about the broken oblivion disc. Fair enough, as an extra, you may want to mention in it that most software publishers, if you send them proof of purchase and/or the broken physical media, will replace it for the cost of the media+shipping, as you have purchased a license for it, not the game itself. You have the right to receive a replacement disc.

I say this as an expert, having owned a software publishing company for 11 years and when I started up, this was the advice I received from a specialist IP lawyer.

If you felt like adding that information on, so the poor guy has an avenue to take to solve his problem, that would be cool.

Maybe this will help.
