Oblivion performance issues

Oblivion was not designed to utilize multiple processors and does not take advantage of them - basically, your game is running on a single core. with a very few things offloaded to a second only if you set that up in the ini file.It was also never intended to run at high FPS, the console versions are capped at 30FPS.

 

First, shut down all unnecessary background processes while playing. Game booster helps with this but doesn't shut down everything. You can exempt specific files from the Antivius constantly checking on every read/write - do this for the game. and entire game folder.

 

As this is a single player game, there is no reason to even have the internet turned on while playing.

 

Any left over processes that cannot be removed can be set to a low priority in the Task manager - Be careful with this.

 

Quiet feet and some other mods can help quite a bit also.

The sound tips didn't help im afraid, Streamline doesn't help and every other performance mod-program-fix i have doesn't work. Lowering ALL sliders to 0 gave me an extra 5-20 fps. In woods i get 25-30 fps, in cities 11-27 fps and indoors 25-150 fps. If there are many npc actors on screen my fps can literally sky dive.

(1) Remove Streamline and regenerate your ini file (or manually re-tweak it) - Streamline is effectively a FPS LIMITER and does that by adjusting the ini file. don't re-add Streamline until AFTER you get the FPS back up a little, and ONLY use the purge and save features, NOT the rest.

 

(2) HrmnsOblivionScriptOptimizationv1.0.esp is (in my experience) not as good as one might like at adjusting scripts, and has been known to make things more unstable. May be to do with OBSE stuff it was never designed to handle. Personally, I don't use it.

 

(3) UOP Vampire Aging & Face Fix.espVersion 1.0.0 - Install Wrye bash, merge a lot of your mods using it, and use the option in the Bashed Patch build to replace this ESP thereby freeing up a slot.

 

(4) With Better Cities and Unique Landscapes running, I can probably predict two places where you'll hit single figure FPS - Anvil Waterfront near the light-house end City Gates, and the Wheatfields added by the Rolling Fields UL mod. These WILL kill your FPS as there are just WAY too many complex meshes for a PC to handle well. As a side note, if you have large wine barrels visible beside the streets in the Imperial City Market District, and on Anvil Docks, disable them in the Better Cities popup.

 

I'm assuming that you have not yet finished PYFFIing all of your meshes, as it takes days of work to do them all. Check each of the mods you have added, including QTP3, and PYFFI everything you can.

Dudes, have you read his machine specs? he should not have problem running Oblivion at fairly good performance unless...

 

Although Bben46 is right pointing Oblivion is not optimized to use multithreading, different from Fallout it does use the cores with advantages (Fallout is limited to two before getting unstable).

 

That video board is enough to run qarls max textures with ease and whatever graphics demands Oblivion could put on it. The issue (if it is one) is elsewhere. Let's analyze a few possibilities:

 

OBGE, like Streamline has an option to limit the FPS, it does so because Oblivion don't need "aiming precision" like First person shooters and this way liberates more CPU power for actual logic flow. Still that feature can be disabled.

 

Streamline adjust the quality for max performance... in that machine it would put Everything on MAX and still have above 40 FPS if nothing else is compromising. Yes, that feature can be disabled too or the cap put higher (of course the FPS limiting should not be active on Both utilities at same time).

 

Having Vertical synch active on the video card can cap the FPS at something around half the monitor's refresh rate if the full FPS can not reach it, this feature should be disabled on the video driver or the ini file, is not enough to do it at the game's configuration screen (second I read long ago).

 

But the real bottom line is about lag and stuttering, if the machine is not presenting them with 30 FPS you are better keeping it so, unless the point is having a glorious "big" number on fraps screen overlay.

 

Maybe you should look for performance hindering outside the game itself, Machine power demands increases exponentially while "visual improvement" increases logarithmically... the machine is very good but is not godlike. Too much screen resolution, AA, AF and general post processing may kill the performance faster you can tell "Ni"

 

Post processing effects puts a heavy toll in performance too (and you have many mods doing this).

 

A final word, purging cell buffers is useful when doing with criterion, if abused it can lead to performance issues reloading more than needed from disc.

 

PS: Just occurred me, this game has a very "sickening" delay in camera movement, mainly when in third person. Is highly advised getting a mod like Chase camera mod or at least setting the speed high on Wrye's bash.

Does the screen visibly flicker and stutter? If not, sod the fps and just play the darn thing - 24fps has been fine for cinema films since they came up with a standardised speed in the first place. Edited by MarkInMKUK
