kvnchrist Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 What exactly is control and can it be so overpowering that it chokes off all other input? I have a brother who is a control freak to the Nth degree. He has to know everything, including turning his house upside down every Friday and looking through his wife's purse and everything. I actually got my niece a cute little diary, with a heart shaped lock on it and he tore the lock off, read the thing and just tossed the thing back on her bed like it wasn't anything. He completely makes the rules in the house and doesn't abide by them. He presently, went out on the verge of his wedding anniversary and bought him a grand touring bike from Harley-Davidson, and gave his wife nothing at all. I am the exact opposite of him. I've always thought that those who were to rigid in their ideals were those who would break the easiest when situations became tence and those who are more adaptive of the events around them, would be more able to deal with adverse conditions.
marharth Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 The person you explained sounds more like a complete "insert cuss word here" then a control freak. If you have a family, you shouldn't be in complete control over what everyone does. Not sure if that's the question you were asking though.
Sync182 Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 Quote "He who can destroy a thing, controls a thing." -Paul Atreides, Dune Your brother has problems. It's not a case of being a control freak, as you put it: by your description, he just plain has no respect for anyone else. The sooner the rest of the family gets away from him, the better off they'll be.
Flintlockecole Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 I've dealt with control freaks many times in my life, and every last one of them ended up on the floor spitting teeth and blood out. Can't stand people like that, one of the few times I'll deliberately start a fight.
Balagor Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 Control is ok, if you mean control your car, a machine, I would say even a situation. But this way you tell about with your brother, is sick, and he needs help. It is IMO an obsession, something neurothic. That kind of control isn´t healthy, and usually ends up in divorce, violence, etc. etc.
JimboUK Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 Control over a spouse is never acceptable, he sounds like he has some serious trust and confidence issues. Maybe someone needs to gently nudge him in the direction of a counsellor?

Especially getting himself an expensive b-day gift and nothing for his wife. What a selfish jerk. I'd take the kids and go, but that's just me. You can't make anyone do anything they're not willing or ready to do.
