Racial Relations in America

Will we ever be able to throw off the stigma of racism?

I remember when MLK was assassinated and America's cities burned. I remember seeing film clips of the way the blacks were treated in the South, during the 60's. Watching Bull Conner loose the dogs on the black demonstrators. I also have read during WWII the internment camps for the Japanese citizens, and now we have uneasiness between the Muslims in this country and abroad. I know our society has had it's troubles with this, but I think we have made massive leaps in society, though there are a few that still cling to the illusion of racial purity.

I've also seen people use racial discontent to further their own careers, as in the Attorney General in the Duke La Cross case. I've also seen race baiters in the news, chasing around any story, that they might be able to spin into a racial conflict, just to get their face in front of a camera. New Orleans after Katrina, was a good example of that. How can we come together, when there are so many out there that make their living on pointing out racism, wither it exists or not

Racism is a nasty little part of the human condition that is left over from the earlier days of humanity. It's that part of our brain that is constantly looking for patterns and correlation, (not necessarily causation,) and instils a bit of paranoia in all of us. Basically, there were two kinds of humans in the early days of humanity, those who were startled by the rustling in the grass, afraid that it might be a tiger about to pounce, and there were those who didn't think anything of it.

Over time, those who assumed it was a tiger and sought safety eventually were right enough times that they outlived the others who didn't. Taking that scenario times a few thousand years, and you can see how some humans who evolved to fear/hate other tribes who might burn their village and rape their women. Some people are able to overcome their primal fear and hatred of those dissimilar to themselves, and others are overcome by it, same as how some people are afraid of the dark, and others theorize conspiracies.

That's the original source of the problem, who knows that the fix is. But I think the actual problem that most people think is racism, is actually a couple of issues; social-classism.. (I have no idea if that's even a word,) and the intentional proliferation of racial tension by some of those in power, such as control of news and media outlets. The social-classism is nothing new to anybody, and it's the de-facto segregation that occurs in society that continues the problem. The schools that poor children go to have less money and therefore worse learning environments. The children then leave with a poor education, so they earn less money. It's a vicious cycle. There are of course white children in these schools, but usually the ratio is not proportional.

RACISM - where MY group is better than yours is a load of rubbish, that type of inferiority complex mentality where you get your jollies by putting other PEOPLE down because they are DIFFERENT from you just shows your LACK OF INTELLIGENCE.

But, there is nothing wrong with me liking, loving, wanting to take care of my own race FIRST.

Blood is as the they say, thicker than water.

As far as America and her internal "race relations" are concerned, EVERY country in the world has the same PROBLEMS.

The USA is not some special case that is worse than others, as a matter of fact, the reason why you would hear MORE of

these incidents from the USA than another country, is because they are more OPEN than other countries.

Where you'd more than likely get more HEAT over there if you brought up the same issues.

Furthermore, when it comes to muslims, I would like to point out that the mosque that is being built in New York is a serious

slap in every American's face.

Had the Americans wanted to build a church near a site where Americans blew up two buildings and killed thousands of

innocent muslim men, women and children, the outcry would have brought so much condemnation that even though it

was within "THEIR RIGHTS" to build said church, they would have rather chosen another spot and abandoned the

project.

But, NO, "it's our right to build here" say the muslims and to hell with your sentiments.

Isn't it then any wonder that the average American wants to throw a fit and blast, literally and proverbially anything that

even looks muslim ?

Can you blame them ?

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.

So, put a sock in it, if you decide to lay any blame on America's doorstep.

Besides, Americans are the BIGGEST FINANCIAL GIVERS IN THE WORLD when it comes to natural disasters right around the world

irrespective of the race, color or creed of the nation in trouble, and I'm not talking about their government, I'm talking about their PEOPLE.

And that INCLUDES muslim countries by the way.

That doesnt sound very racist to me.

This is probably the most ignorant thing I've read in a long time. So if you were on a sinking ship, scrambling for life craft, you would be the one saying "White men and women first"? And you don't think that's racism? Also, the WTC had nothing to do with race, so you're way off topic.

This is the kind of garbage that I was talking about being proliferated by our fair and balanced news reporting.

Are you serious?

Islam and the term Muslim is used to describe a religion, has nothing to do with race. Not many terrorists are Muslims. Muslims died in 9/11 as well. In history, there has been a larger number of Christan terrorists, are a still a large number to this day. One of the biggest terror attacks in the history of Norway was committed by a right wing CHRISTAN extremist. Quit blaming Muslims.

This is starting to get way off topic, but I have a hard time believing you are serious. The fundamental problem is people like you who think it is fine to categorize certain groups due to the actions of a few, or due to their own social agenda.

Actually, I think it's only a natural thing to look very closely at any veiled/arab looking people we see in public places. It would be wrong to actively persecute them due to their race/religion but I don't have a problem with profiling in this case. These people have purposely twisted a clause that was intended to only be used in the case of home invasion, or, arguably invasion of their country.

The original "Jihad" was NOT permission to go to another country and blow up their buildings/kill their people. What they are doing is NOT Jihad. There is nothing holy about it, and it has not been blessed/endorsed by their god.

As for Blacks and Whites... I am a white women in the South. No one in my family ever had slaves, we were sharecroppers - one baby step above slavery ourselves. My mother and aunt participated in the sitins to get the blacks their rights. And then the state finally agreed to do it. In this state, integration was a complete disaster. For her senior year, mom was supposed to be bussed to a school where she would be one of five whites... in the entire school. She was scared, really scared. There isn't much to mom, physically. So my grandparents snuck mom into another school where she finished her senior year. And the housing committee pretty much managed to keep everyone segregated anyway.

While I was growing up, the schools/news/government did everything they could to make me feel guilty for being white! For what? We were Irish that came over in the potato famine on one side and sharecroppers on the other. The only person in my family that was prejudice was my dad's dad... and he was kidnapped by a black man when he worked as a taxi driver. He was OK before that. So I don't blame him TOO much.

As for black/white marriages... I'm for them and against them at the same time. It's a beautiful thing when people from that much of a different background can come together and make a family. But... whenever a white person and an African American marry and have kids... the child is considered "black" they are half white, they have a whole other side of history and culture that seems to just be disregarded. I hate that. The other reason... I think light eyes, hair and skin are attractive and it does sadden me that eventually those traits will be rare/extinct in America... the world's melting pot.

How about white males? Looking back in history, they're responsible for many heinous crimes and atrocities. We better keep them in check since they obviously can't be trusted.

That's true.... and they get away with more too.... Note that most of the politicians in the US are white males.........
