So..im running on Win 7 64 and Creative X-fi card..i dont remember if i had this problem when i played fo3 way back..anyway i started modding recently and now i do.I have tried pretty much everything and nothing seems to work(which gives stable game) so far best has been the fix with Ac3filter..i checked the "use wave out by default"..I get flawless radio and game effects but NO Npc voice sound at all in dialogue..just cant figure out how to fix this..please help :) Edited by DocZ

I don`t know how AC3 filter can help in this case. One thing you may want to try is running the sound thru "Alchemy" (at least it should return the EAX lost with the death of DSound on Vista and Seven).

You may want to try third party codecs also, K-Lite works fine and solves several issues with Bethesda games sounds in general.

I installed K-lite pack but if i "uncheck" the wav out by default from ac3filer even the whole codec is disabled by k-lite..the stuttering starts..when i first installed K-lite and ran game with ac3..the dialogue sounds returmed briefly but then just went off and never came back..so it appears that it should be only configuration issues at mo but for me the K-lite and its setting are complete jibberish :P

I have tried also with Alchemy enabled..sounds works ok but game freezes after few mins everytime.

Are you using surround sound? If not, you need to set up downmixing with your sound card (channel phantoming effect in the default Win7 driver, then configure speakers), because AFAIK, FO3 outputs surround only.

No clue what you are talking about im afraid..how/where do i set this up?

What bloodfromastone means is a known problem when the sound is setup to surround and no "center" channel exist. Myself experimented it when using stereo phones with the 5.1 setup... the loss of dialog voices.

One easy solution is setting on the CMSS 3D (what I thought you was confusing with AC3, this is a multichannel format not used by the game).

edit to add: this is done in your Creative console.

PS: I recall long ago a problem with sound setup in a game which needed to change the ini to force it to use multichannel setups (tell the number of speakers), I just don't remember anymore which game it was.

So i should set the CMSS 3D to Surround? and how bout speaker settings? i dont have speaker's but i have x-fi usb headset.

How about codecs..should i install k-lite etc or go with Win 7 default codecs?

The problem arises when the game supposes you are on surround instead stereo, so it sends frontal sound (like when you are speaking directly to someone) to the center channel instead sharing it equally on left and right channels. Since the signal is not present in a stereo headphone attached in a surround environment the voice vanishes.

Before continuing I need to solve an arose doubt... do you have a X-Fi card or a X-Fi headphone or both? (sorry I don't know how this head gear is). If is a X-Fi card you have a console where all sound aspects can be controlled.

One of this is exactly changing the output to a (stereo) headphone, if it is connected in a front panel from creative the exchange is automatic, otherwise it is changed from the "Speaker and headphone" button. change to use headphones and this should solve the issue. Notice this works even if a home theater is used (hopefully the card, or however the X-Fi headgear works, will drive the surround source to both channels).

Now, you should setup the speakers second the way you would use it. Lets say you buy a stereo or 2.1 sound... the console is set accordingly. If buy a home theater 5.1 or 7.1, set it accordingly... the point is changing to use "headphone" whenever using the headgear.

EDIT: i reinstalled all my audio drivers..motherboard/soundcard and phones..i dont have any other codecs than Win 7 default..i changed CMSS 3D setting from all possible control panels to Surround and i could dare to say the stuttering gone..:)

All right, so my previous post was correct in the supposition... you need to set the sound driver to use "headphone" and/or set it to 2.1. I'm telling this because I don't know how the headgear works.

Since there is no surround involved the CMSS 3D does nothing useful since it's function is the inverse, to distribute a stereo source to all surround channels.

Come back if the issue is not yet solved with the change to 2.1 or headphone.
