wireless connectivity

Recommended Posts

lol ya i guess its possible, but like i said, no paranoia here. i dont think anyone is stealing anything from me :P

(how do i know anyways?)

Paranoia? You're the one posting on this forum that your Internet connection is slower than you expect. You also mention that your connection is via a wireless access point. It is just a logical conclusion that one of the possible problems can be more people using your wireless access point than you are expecting. Any time someone comes to me asking what is wrong with a computer system, my 1st thoughts are always about how are people mis-using it.

I already mentioned a couple of things you can do to check for such activity. Look for blinky lights when their should be no activity...if so, use WireShark to find out exactly what that activity is.

ooook then. well if someone is stealing from me then oh well. thank you for your input.

i put my antenna horizontal and it seems to be working so far. i havent had any time outs or lags or anything. as i said, it was always a random occurrence, so if it stays good like this in another week or so, then maybe turning the antenna was all that needed to be done.

the real reason i really posted this was to learn a little about wireless connection. i bought my router like 3 or 4 years ago, i didnt know if it was time to update, or if i had a crappy router or if buying a new one would help.

thanks everyone for helpin out. hopefully that was all i needed :)

  • 4 weeks later...

so i just bought a new router since my old one died. bought this linksys:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190

hooked it up, computer recognized it and everything, my laptop recognizes it my PS3 recognizes it. i set it up so it has a password and everything. but idk, somethings not right. im downloading at like 200KBs/sec. its taking me longer to download files now. where it used to take seconds, its not taking minutes. i turned everything off like was said, no activity lights. i went to a couple of those speed websites and it says my downloading and uploading numbers are where they should be, but when i actually download something, yea its not fast at all. im actually typing this in the time its taking to download a 7MB file. i looked on my PS3 its syaing a 67% signal strength, whereas my laptop is readin 5 bars. some other things that when i go to watch a video, it doesnt load. normally when i clicked on a video it would load as it played, usually loading faster then it played. now it will play for like 10 seconds, stop to buffer, continue and so on, and im talking online videos like YouTube, not videos i have on my PC.

idk if i did something wrong when hooking it up, but i went over it like 5 times, theres only 2 wires :P

idk if anyone can give me any insight. its not like my issue before. its not weaker then i think it should be, it actually IS weaker then is should be. its not randomly dropping or taking forever for my broswer to load. just downloading slow, could it be the fact its a Wireless G router? or something? lol.

anyways, any insight would be appreciated. thanks agin
