Looking at building a new rig - Is this a good deal?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I am currently looking at building a new PC, mine is seriously begining to show its age. I was at least lucky enough to run the Witcher 2 :)

I have been surfing around Newegg for the past couple weeks and came upon .This combo deal

Is this package worth the bucks? Are there any components included that are overpriced?

Any response would be greatly appreciated,

well if your happy with it, is whats important. it will deff play any game for sure.

now. are you over paying for anything? kinda

your case is pretty expensive. you can deff get a cheaper but still cool case, and its only a mid tower. for that price it should be a full tower.

your motherboard is also pretty damn expensive. in the build i plan on doing, mine is $150. however yours is 3-way SLI whereas mine is 2-way. but you dont need 3-way. imo your better off saving $100 and getting a cheaper motherboard.

your also buying True Image Home and Trend Micro listed at the bottom. $85 right there you dont need to spend.

you also have a blue ray drive in there. i personally dont need a blu ray drive as i have a PS3, if you dont plan on watchng blu rays you can go with a regular cd/dvd drive for $20. but obviously keep it if you wanna watch blu rays, just letting you know its a blu ray drive.

you have a good graphics card, and its not over expensive. but if you were building it piece by piece you could prolly get a cheaper one around $250, or less depending on how low your willing to go. considering your board it 3-way capable, or if you got a board thats 2-way, you could easily get a cheaper card, get 2 of them and be just fine. if your spending around $200+ on a card, just one would be sufficient to play just about any game max settings. but deff a good card you got there.

if you bought a PSU separately, there is one i have my eye on i would recommend by Raidmax. 850W 80 Plus Gold. little bit more wattage and a bit more efficient then urs for only $10 more. but yours is deff fine. 750W is plenty and 80 plus bronze is a big plus! (no pun intended)

also this combo doesnt have a 3rd party heatsink. so if you wanted one be sure to include one :)

other then that, and most of it isnt a big deal really, all a matter of opinion, its a solid combo. i prefer to build it piece by piece (getting combos if i can) so i can swap out certain pieces. for example, i plan on getting the Seagate Momentous HDD for my build over a regular HDD.

but i havent built a PC before, im just planning on it like you, so maybe someone whos done this before can provide more of a solid, its a good/bad combo then i can.

The motherboard is not really worth it.

The case is good but a dust trap.

You will still have to buy windows.

You buy $85 of useless software.

You cant get a second video card for crossfire

Not such a good deal.

Hi,

the combo price is the sum of the parts from newegg, so this is fair. The 85$ for the two useless software should be better invested if you take a Radeon 6970 (350 $). The Asus mobo is very high priced and if you need such a hightech one you have to decide yourself. I'm using the good old Asus Maximus (s775) and i don't regret it that i have spend the money for it.

There is one point in this rig that bothers me, it has only one 2TB harddrive, in such a high priced gaming rig i would expect at least one small ssd for the operating system. A 60GB SSD is around 100$, so you should think about it if you want to add one.

Everyone hit all the points on this Newegg combo (like most complete barebone deals on the web)

Also notice how that's a 2GB video card, not a 1GB. Unless you're going to be running multiple monitors or multiple demanding games/applications, you're best off just getting a 1GB video card with the same specs. Just my take on it, though.
