lemonfan1
Hey guys, I have an old iPod touch, second generation, that my older sister gave me when she got an iPhone. It was working fine until suddenly it just died. I tried all the tricks, including holding the home and top button at the same time for 10 seconds, but it didn't work. Doesn't show up when plugged into my computer, doesn't charge and the screen is dark. Near as I can figure, the battery died. But it just feels weird to me. I mean, I had a good 80% of power left in the iPod when I last looked at it. Can a battery simply die just like that *snaps fingers*? If this is the case, I can order a new battery and install it myself without much trouble. I just want to make sure this is what's going on. Anyone else with experience in this that can help? Can an iPod's battery just suddenly drop dead on you, even though it was holding a change fine before?
prandiningrat
if you didnt remove battery from your ipods, thats still using an idle power...you need to remove battery completely if you are not using it for long time..if you did for the tricks but its still nothings happens, i think your ipod battery is fried... In fact, doing so with a new iPod would void the warranty. The battery inside of my iPod is soldered onto a power strap. Normally, I'd have to get mine sent out if the battery needs replacing, but I can do it myself for much, much cheaper. I just need to know if a battery can just up and die like that so suddenly. hoofhearted4
yup they can just up and die like that, happen to me with my Ipod way back when, might even be the same one as urs, not sure. what were u doing with it? were u plugging it in? were you listening to it? did u just try to turn and on and nothing? cause many things can screw them up. when you plug it in, if a spark or a short or using the wrong cable or anything can short out the batter or sometimes ruin the ipod itself. if it gets too hott, for example your listening to it, it falls in your couch between cushions it may over hear causing damage (happened to my friend hence the weird scenario) storing it in a hot place is also bad (duh). although it seems easy to damage (i mena over heating in a couch?!?!) funny story, the one that died on me, went through the wash twice, and also had a cracked screen (that was replaced) and was fine until the battery died randomly.....also i think the batteries can actually just randomly die, not from heat or overuse or anything, just blat, die....after all it is technology, and all technology is prone to random failure lol. She up and died on me. Had her turned on and was using her, then hit the top button since I had to do something for a few minutes, then when I came back and tried to use the home button to turn the screen back on, it was dead. I'll try replacing the battery first since it's cheaper and will only cost me between 4 and 7 bucks. If it doesn't work, then I shall be saving up a new one. :) Thanks to everyone for the information! <
LHammonds
I have quite a few and several of each: iPod, iPod mini, iPhone 3, iPhone 4 and an iPad. No battery has up-n-died outright on me yet. However, there definitely seems to be a correlation between iPhone firmware updates and shorter battery life. I keep my iPhone updated and usually see battery life initially stretch to almost 2 days before needing to be plugged in...but wind up needing it to be plugged in overnight and again in the middle of the day or I risk the phone going dead. I've seen battery life get drastically reduced with firmware updates (notice I did not say "upgrades") in all my iPhones. However, the most drastic was with my wife's iPhone. She had this phone for over a year now and never plugged it into iTunes and was running the original firmware (4.1 IIRC). She said battery life typically could last for a day and a half...even with the kids playing games on the phone. However, I updated her phone last week to the latest version for the 1st time. She now notices the phone will be dead before the end of the day if she does not plug it in sometime during the day. I have to wonder if each firmware update gradually reduces the usefulness in order to eventually get you to buy a "new" version with a longer-lasting battery.

LHammonds
wow you really like Apple! Not particularly. The iPhone I have was paid for by my work...which integrates with our email (and my gmail) as well as remote desktop control! The iPad was also bought by work as an experiment for getting Citrix to work on them so our physicians can use them instead of clunky Windows laptops. My father-in-law is the one who bought his children (2) iPhones and all his grandchildren (5) iPod minis.
