Fallout 3 keep freezing

For me, on average, every few minutes, Fallout 3 will just freeze/pause for like 15 seconds or so. It doesn't matter if my character is moving or just standing still, inside or outside, in a conversation or not, in pipboy or not, etc. Very annoying/frustrating/irritating to play the game like this! Using the latest version (1.7.0.3) but it's been like this since the original release version. I tried adding these lines to fallout.ini's "[general]" section with no effect:

bUseThreadedAI=1

iNumHWThreads=2

Also tried Muspellheim's ini tweaks but no change.

Oddly, Fallout: New Vegas, Morrowind, and Skyrim (which all use the Gamebyro engine and are developed by Bethesda) don't have this problem...

However, Fallout: New Vegas suffers from gradual stuttering (memory leak?) with an eventual system freeze/hang (sometimes with multicolored patterns and the top 1/3 of the screen covered in a flickering gray/grey box, and audio stuttering). Sometimes it recovers if I alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del but usually not and I'm forced to reboot the system. I thought it might be a conflict with my sound card so I removed it and used the motherboard audio but, while it has yet to do the flickering and multicolored patterns, it will just crash outright with this error:

Faulting application falloutnv.exe, version 1.4.0.525, faulting module falloutnv.exe, version 1.4.0.525, fault address 0x007641b3.

I think it might be an IRQ conflict but I can't get the motherboard audio (multimedia controller) to have a different IRQ than the video card (not motherboard-integrated) because the BIOS shows them as on the same bus or whatever (unlike when I put in the sound card I can give it a different IRQ than the video card but I still get the freeze/lockup and multicolored patterns and/or gray/grey flickering box).

Am also trying to get rid of the loading screens in both Fallout 3 and NV but doesn't matter what I do to the fallout.ini, falloutprefs.ini, and fallout_default.ini files--nothing seems to make a difference.

Edit: I should mention that I am only using the DLCs (all current ones) in Fallout: New Vegas, and only 2 mods (no DLCs) in Fallout 3 (which I have tried disabling but no effect). I will try disabling the NV DLCs but I doubt it will have any effect either...

I have made fallout 3 4gig capable and that seemed to solve some problems.

GREAT! I thought Werne was onto something (post #24) for stuborn problems like yours .... NOW why don't you post more details of exactly what you did so others may benefit! :O

Try this:

[Audio]

iAudioHWThread=2

[General]

iNumHWThreads=2

bUseThreadedAI=1

iRenderingThread2HWThread=1

iRenderingThread1HWThread=0

iHWThread6=5

iHWThread5=5

iHWThread4=5

iHWThread3=4

iHWThread2=4

iHWThread1=4

100% working on i3 2120 with win7x64 ;D it took me about 2 years to find this solution.

That's a nice little find. I've modified it slightly for my own use (i7 w/ Hyperthreading) and it seems to improve things slightly, although I do have an annoying little micro-stutter

[Audio]

iAudioHWThread=4

[General]

iNumHWThreads=8

bUseThreadedAI=1

iRenderingThread2HWThread=1

iRenderingThread1HWThread=0

iRenderingThread3HWThread=2

iRenderingThread4HWThread=3

iHWThread4=7

iHWThread3=6

iHWThread2=5

iHWThread1=4

Already using it, and it doesn't stop the occasional microstutter. Does smooth things out a little more though.

You never know. With a few dozen more tweaks and a couple of dozen more mods, Fallout 3 might just be out of the beta stages and ready for a public release :tongue:

Well, if anyone cares, I think the problem I'm having with Fallout 3 is due to the audio CODEC because everytime a new song on the radio would end, the freeze/pause happens. After changing the audio CODEC priority in Windows "Sounds and Audio Devices" control panel the freezing went away (for the radio anyway) but still occurs at other random times. I was also getting the freeze almost every time the scene changed (going back into the wasteland from an enclosed environment, etc). I even got a crash after disabling AC3's CODEC to use wave output vs. DirectSound. Sheesh...this game is WAY too finicky about audio! Ridiculous I should even have to dork with the CODECs in the first place when EVERY FREAKIN' OTHER PC GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED (since ~1985, yo) has never even had an issue with CODECs.

[Audio]

iAudioHWThread=4

[General]

iNumHWThreads=8

bUseThreadedAI=1

iRenderingThread2HWThread=1

iRenderingThread1HWThread=0

iRenderingThread3HWThread=2

iRenderingThread4HWThread=3

iHWThread4=7

iHWThread3=6

iHWThread2=5

iHWThread1=4

If you have 8 cores, then add these lines:

iRenderingThread1HWThread=0

iRenderingThread2HWThread=1

iRenderingThread3HWThread=2

iRenderingThread4HWThread=3

iRenderingThread5HWThread=4

iRenderingThread6HWThread=5

iRenderingThread7HWThread=6

iRenderingThread8HWThread=7

iHWThread1=0

iHWThread2=1

iHWThread3=2

iHWThread4=3

iHWThread5=4

iHWThread6=5

iHWThread7=6

iHWThread8=7

May work >_>
