Recommended Posts

ironically i just posted something recently about my router and whatnot, but this past week it died on me completely, which means i need a new router so my laptops can get internet so i dont have to your my parents PC lol.

just want to know what i need to look for and consider when it comes to buying my new router. i feel like the last one i purchased wasnt top quality, and only bought it cause the Staples guy said so lol, knowing a bit mroe about this stuff then i did then id rather know what to look for and make the decision myself.

thanks guys hope to hear back ASAP so i can buy a router ASAP lol

What brand did he tell you to buy? Netgear? Those aren't all that bad...but not the best either (family has had a few crap out on them). I'd go for a Linksys. My friend this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190

He says the range is very good on it and it goes through walls very well (he lives in a house built in the 1900s, so the walls are pretty thick). He has it in his back computer room and it reaches all the way upstairs to his dad's laptop and there has never been a connection drop. Pretty cheap too..$50 with .99 cent shipping :)

If you have wireless phones, make sure they are not the same frequency as the router (2.4GHz for this one), it causes interference between the two.

how do i know what frequency my phone is at? :P

and since its the only one thats been mentioned to me and the reviews are good, having by far not only the most reviews, but having the best reviews on newegg, i think ill go ahead and buy it in the morning...if anyone has any more opinions, please say so, ill edit when ive bought it :)

Normally says on the phone itself...mine is 6.0GHz. Most wireless phones these days are above the 2.4GHz range...but if you have older ones they will be that frequency.

purchased off newegg today, pumped to get it in

a question though...does having two antennas mean more signal strength or can it just handle more connections or what....i was curious about this when looking for an adapter so my desktop could have wireless, and i noticed some have two even 3 antennas, and that the router has two as well, my old one having one....just wondering what more antennas generally means
