CravicDiablo
I have played oblivion quite a lot, modded and un-modded. Recently I've encountered a problem where my Oblivion client will become invisible when I start it in windowed mode, the sounds will still play and music from the main menu will loop. However it appears to work perfectly fine in Full Screen mode, with the exception I can't alt + tab out without crashing. When this problem first appeared however it didn't, showing only the menus in game and no characters or mapping. I did disable some mods and this seemed to work, but windowed mode still has issues. This has never occurred before, and while it could be a recently placed mod, I did not put in a new mod for several days before this happened. However I have been diddling about in the Shivering Ilse, which might have something to do with the bug. I new update is it has started to crash at different times. Durning main quest I've crashed at Kvatch when entering the gatehouse. Also some items appear to be glitchy and their icons appear as pixels.
HeyYou
Try deleting your oblivion.ini located in my games\oblivion, and let the game regenerate it. You will prolly have to reset your graphics options...... see if that doesn't make any difference.

Ivoryhammer
Try going to your documents, go to "My Games" delete the Oblivion folder, it could be that there is a corrupted save there, this happened to me a while ago.
HeyYou
Try going to your documents, go to "My Games" delete the Oblivion folder, it could be that there is a corrupted save there, this happened to me a while ago. Deleting the whole folder is not a good plan, and is unnecessary. The oblivion.ini is the only file that can conceivably cause a startup crash. Corrupted saves will only cause a crash when loading the save, or, when trying to save again.
MotoSxorpio
pixelized icons? Maybe overheating as well, but that wouldn't be the main problem. Alt+Tabbing is a hit or miss thing with Oblivion. Works on my XP setup, works on my cousin's Win7 but a lot of ppl get CTD from trying. There is an Alt+Tab exe mod on the nexus that might fix that particular problem. If you are using Win7/Vista, you can try disabling Desktop Composition for Oblivion.exe.
