Internet browser issues

Since the website has been updated i have been unable to access the New Vegas and Fallout 3 site properly.

After reading other posts and much trial and error i`ve got nowhere and i`m not sure what else to try.

Below is a list of my issues and what i`ve tryed so far.

Firefox 6.0.1

When viewing a mod page i am unable to see any description field and the tabs above it do not function. The download button does not function.

I have deleted all nexus site cookies (repeated this everytime with every attempt, just in case).

I have set addons to allow all nexus sites.

I have disabled all addons.

Tryed running in safe mode.

Restored browser to default settings.

Checked windows firewall (inc. disabling it completely).

Checked Avast anti virus settings (inc. disabling it completely).

Tryed ALL variations.

Adjusted site preferences (download page).

IE9

Description field visible, but the tabs above and download button does not function.

Carried out the same attempts as Firefox (though i`m not so familiar with IE9).

I also tryed IE 64bit with even less sucess.

Any help or suggestions would be warmly welcomed.

The file tabs and description fields are JavaScript based.

Firefox has a built in JavaScript-Support which can be switched on or of under the Preferences, Content Tab.

Also check, that no other application is blocking either JavaScript or the Nexus-Site's scripts, which could be achieved by Add-ons like NoScript.

But since you have issues using IE9 as well, I assume you a setting changed in your OS.

You can try updating JavaScript or, if you changed some OS-Settings with an application like XP-AntiSpy, try reactivation of certain OS-Settings. A disabled "Scripting Host" could prevent JavaScript from running entirely.

@tortured Tomato, FYI - JavaScript <> Java. So installing Oracle/Sun Java on your system is not going to affect JavaScript which is directly supported by the browser. In fact, you don't even have to have Java installed at all. Not even the rinky-dink Microsoft version called Microsoft Java Virtual Machine.

I performed this same test on August 24, 2011 as noted here --> Click me. It noted some minor issues as well as comments on new uploads being broken.

I performed the same test again on August 27, 2011 as noted here --> Click me. All noted issues were resolved by then.

Below is a copy of those test results:

Firefox is the Nexus-recommended browser (so says me). I initially could not get content loaded when going tab to tab such as the Files tab, images tab, etc. but I realized NoScript was blocking it so once I allowed all scripts to run, it worked fine after that.

Dark0ne tries to make the site work well with Firefox and Internet Explorer...anything beyond that is just icing on the cake.

I have tested the following browsers:

NOTE: The above "portable" browsers can be used by anyone. They do not require "installation" so there is zero impact on your computer...simply extract them, run the program to test it out, then delete once done. All tests were performed with the software as configured straight "out-of-the-box" without any tweaks or changes.

Check List Tests:

  1. Can login and remain logged in from page to page (while browsing and downloading)
  2. Can see mod page description, files, comments and images.
  3. Can download mods over 2MB in size.
  4. Can create mod page (modder action)
  5. Can set and remove search tags.
  6. Can upload files to mod page (modder action).
  7. Can upload images to mod page.
  8. Can add comments on mod page.
  9. Can upload images to imageshare (modder action).
  10. Can add comments on imageshare.

Side note: Holy-moly Batman! The staff "delete file" option is an instant delete link that asks for no verification. Scary indeed. Please add a confirmation for deletion since it is very possible we might be thinking "delete file" as in an individual file...not "delete mod page and all content"

Based on the above test results, all major site functions I have tested have been addressed and fixed by Dark0ne.

UPDATE: September 7, 2011 - Just tested Firefox 6.0.2 and IE 9 (32-bit and 64-bit) and they are still working as expected.

So if you don't read any of the above or just skimmed over it, here are the juicy bits that sums it up:

If you are having a problem with the site, download and use one of the portable browsers I mentioned above as a test. If the portable version works, that means there is a problem with your installed browser. If the portable version does NOT work, then something on your system is causing the problem such as a software firewall or over-zealous anti-spyware system blocking browser cookies and / or JavaScript.

Thanks, I see, I totally confused this. So enabling the Scripting Host or installing JavaScript doesn't help at all, my bad.

@dready12345

Leaves the possibilities that your browsers are both mis-configured or another program is blocking the file site scripts.

btw

I successfully used Firefox, IE9 and Opera as well. All works dandy as far as I can see.

@tortured Tomato, thank you for your reply.

I`m very greatful for your time and effort.

@LHammonds, thank you not only for your reply but for your other helpful posts and support.

I had read your other posts but had failed to grasp the idea of trying to use a new browser

to narrow down the cause of the problem.

I had realised that the site was not at fault and i now know it`s not browser related either.

Whilst i haven`t yet found the issue, i`ve found that i have some network issues.

A thorough check of all my software has revealed nothing.

Until now i hadn`t realised how much i value Nexus, its content and its community.

As soon as i`ve fixed my issue i shall be showing my gratitude in a premium way!

Thanks again,

Ed

Despite my best efforts i was unable to find the issues that had stopped me acessing the site correctly.

Today i received an update to Avast anti-virus which has now given me a fully functioning site again with IE9.

I am still having the original issues with Firefox6 (My favorite), Firefox portable and Opera portable which i`ll

investigate further.

As LHammonds correctly stated "If the portable version does NOT work, then something on your system is causing the problem such as a software firewall or

over-zealous anti-spyware system blocking browser cookies and / or JavaScript."

Thanks for your help and support.

Ed

Sounds like you did find out what was causing the problem....Avast. You might not know what setting to flip but you certainly narrowed down to where the problem is located.

Avast used to be my favorite antivirus solution for a while but it was limited to home use only and required yearly registration. I switched to Comodo Internet Security since it was a more robust system in terms of what it can protect against as well as being free to use at home or work! I also had problems with Avast reporting too many false positives (I could tell because I used www.virustotal.com to double-check suspicious files).

Internet Explorer is a hacker's dream tool which can allow them to use it as a backdoor and dial-home utility once it obtains personal data. Most people's systems (even if they have a great firewall) allow Internet Explorer to do whatever it (or other program) wants. I have a special rule in Comodo Firewall which blocks IE by default. If I open IE to browse a web site, Comodo will ask me if I want to give it permission, to which I can answer Yes...but anytime in the future, it will ask me again. If IE pops up trying to access the Internet when I'm not expecting it to, that is a sign that malware is trying to dial home with your private data. Windows Firewall has no way of blocking out-bound connections like that...just inbound.
